STEAM Week has been a fantastic celebration of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, with so much happening across the school that we could not possibly capture it all!
What we can share, however, are some of the many highlights, as our girls embraced challenges, thought creatively and learned through inspiring, hands-on experiences.
Monday – Puzzle Power
What we can share, however, are some of the many highlights, as our girls embraced challenges, thought creatively and learned through inspiring, hands-on experiences.
We kicked off the week with the Happy Puzzle Company, where the girls worked in mixed teams to tackle an exciting escape-room-style challenge. Faced with a variety of logic puzzles, the girls demonstrated impressive resilience, clear communication and excellent teamwork. It was wonderful to see them persevere, support one another and celebrate their shared successes.
Tuesday – Environmental Science
Tuesday’s assembly, led by Andy from Severn Trent Water, was both highly informative and great fun. Highlights included girls crawling through simulated sewers to remove nappies and (slightly cheeky!) plush poo toys, learning first-hand why responsible water use matters. Thankfully, Mrs Donelly trusted the girls to guide her through sensible water conservation practices and avoided having a bucket of water tipped over her head! If parents wish to leave feedback for Andy they may do so through this link. Year 3 and 4 then took part in hands-on workshops with Andy, deepening their understanding of water conservation and how small actions can make a big difference.
Elsewhere, Kindergarten girls enjoyed a plant workshop with Mrs Eveleigh and impressed her with their confident knowledge of the parts of a plant, as well as the names of some wonderfully exotic herbs, fruits and vegetables. Reception to Year 2 worked with Mr Watson, a dedicated volunteer who oversees the school allotment and works tirelessly to develop it into a rich, hands-on learning hub for our pupils. The girls amazed him with their understanding of which parts of plants produce different fruits and vegetables. Highlights included spotting real wriggly worms and tasting purple carrots and delicious radishes.
Wednesday – Fairytale Engineering Returns
Wednesday saw the much-loved return of Fairytale Engineering. More of Jack’s golden eggs than ever before survived their dramatic fall down the beanstalk onto the playground, while Year 4 squealed with delight as their pig houses withstood the hurricane-force winds huffed out by our determined wolf. Year 1 designed some fantastic boats for the Gingerbread Man—although he didn’t quite escape, as the girls were very happy to show him the inside of their tummies!
Next week’s article will share all the excitement from Thursday’s Space Day and Friday’s celebration of female STEM heroes. We can’t wait to tell you more!
For now, hear from Mrs Hobson about why STEM is so important to our school.
