Senior School Admissions

The 11+ process can be daunting but the key is finding the right school for your daughter as an individual. At EHS, we support you during the application process in the same way we support our girls throughout their EHS journey.

Starting Your Application

Making a Registration for your daughter will require you to set up a unique login to our Admissions Portal. From here you will be able to make applications (including scholarship applications), complete important forms, track your applications progress and communicate with us directly. We hope this will make your family's journey through our admissions process as simple and convenient as possible. Please make sure you make a note of the email address and password for future use.

No. We accept applications from families based in a very wide area, and do not give preference to those living locally.

Approximately 50% of our Prep girls join our Senior School – usually around 30, having undergone the same entrance procedure as our external candidates.

What to expect in the admissions process

Entry is academically selective; assessments are taken in Year 6 for entrance the following September.

Entrance Exams

Your daughter will be assessed on English, Mathematics, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. In addition, a confidential report on achievement and progress is requested from their current school. Assessment may be online and/or at our school premises. The content is based on the National Curriculum and no special preparation is recommended. We are not looking at what a candidate has been taught, but the potential they demonstrate.

You and your daughter will be invited to attend either a morning or afternoon session. Details will be confirmed with you directly closer to the October entrance exam date.

Girls do not need to wear school uniform (although some do), they just need to be comfortable. They do not need to bring anything with them for the exam however, they may wish to bring a water bottle.

Our entrance examination is a computer based, 50-minute exam which includes questions measuring;

- Verbal Ability: Covering vocabulary, grammar and comprehension
- Numerical Ability: Covering arithmetic and problem solving
- Non-verbal Ability

Tutoring is not necessary, nor something we encourage. We do recommend that your daughter practises Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning: the Bond 11+ books are a good resource. We do not provide any past papers. We want our entrance examination to assess a child’s ability to learn.

If your daughter has an educational psychologist’s report which states that she has a special educational need, you will need to send us a copy of this in advance. The report should be less than 2 years old. This will then be reviewed by our Director of Learning. Please include on your registration form any medical information, such as problems with eyesight or hearing, which may significantly affect your daughter’s performance in the exam.

Interviews

We are keen to meet all prospective pupils in person to find out more about their individual interests, gifts and talents. All girls are required to attend a 10-minute interview with the Headmistress or another member of staff. All interviews take place on the day of the entrance exam.

Decision-making and offers

Once the exams are complete, the results will be considered alongside a candidate’s school report and the interview. Parents’ decisions on acceptance are required as soon as possible and by the date requested by the school.

Results and subsequent offers are normally posted to parents during the second week of December following the entrance examination in October. We do not provide a score like the grammar schools exams. Your letter will detail whether or not your daughter has been offered a place at EHS and what kind of offer e.g. full fee paying, scholarship or bursary.

We ask for final decision whether you intend to accept, or decline, our offer of a place in early March.

Joining at Other Points

Girls can apply to join us elsewhere in our Senior School, as long as we have places available. Your daughter could join us in any year group – apart from Year 11, and if she joins Year 10, we would prefer her to do this by the half term of the Autumn Term.

She would need to take an entry test, appropriate to her age, in English, Maths and French (or her main modern foreign language). She would also come to an interview with the Headmistress, and we would ask her current school for a confidential report on her achievement and progress.

Occasionally, we also run a supplementary entrance exam around Easter time. Please contact us if you’d like your daughter to be added to the waiting list.
