Studies show that girls outperform boys in STEM subjects at A-level. But, despite some progress, girls continued to be outnumbered in STEM careers.

Fortunately, at EHS Prep, we love a challenge because with challenge becomes opportunity. This week, school has been particularly joyous because it has been with great pride that we have immersed the entire Prep School from Nursery to Year Six in the wonderful world of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics with our annual STEAM week.

We know that Science and Technology are a real strength of our school, with our girls fortunate enough to have their Science lessons delivered by our wonderful Science specialist, Mrs Eveleigh. Our unique Prep School Science Laboratory and Prep School Computing Suite are both extremely well resourced and the kinaesthetic nature of these lessons ensure that every girl enjoys the opportunities that these subjects offer.

At EHS, our aim is to prepare girls for future success. Within the Prep School, our ambition is that every girl is empowered to follow the path of their dreams, without doubt or fear. Many of our Prep School alumni have gone on to pursue careers in the field of medicine or engineering and it is my hope that our current cohort will be inspired by the joy found within our annual STEAM week. This morning, I asked the girls which had been their favourite part and their answers varied from the awe and wonder experienced in the huge, indoor Stardome planetarium that graced The Octagon on Thursday, to the Fairytale Engineering task on Tuesday which required collaboration and creative ideas and the asteroid simulator enjoyed by Year Six on Friday.

My book of the week this week has been Kate Pankhurst's 'We are all astronauts' a wonderful book highlighting some of the incredible women who have made extraordinary contributions to space exploration. I encouraged the girls to find someone within the book who they could relate to. We looked at Kalpana Chawla, the first Indian-born woman to go into space, Katherine Johnson - the remarkable mathematician who worked with NASA during the Space Race and helped make space travel possible and Ursula Marvin  one of the first female geologists to study rocks brought back from the moon! My hope is that the work we do year round to empower the girls to believe they can overcome barriers to achieve whatever they desire, coupled with the unique opportunities provided by events such as STEAM week, will ensure our girls leave EHS Prep School well-prepared to reach for the stars!

Have a wonderful weekend.
