Celebrating our successes and celebrating us: a highlight of just some of the amazing things we have done and achieved this week!
Swimming Success!
As the spring term ends, the Nursery team has reflected on how incredibly well the girls have progressed in their swimming capabilities and confidence as the weeks have gone by. With the guidance of Mrs Sawyers, the girls have practiced key pool skills such as entering and climbing out of the pool independently, turning from their front to their back, jumping in and have recently began moving through the water without their pool noodles. Impressively, some girls have achieved their first starfish without any floating device! We are very proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing their sessions continue in the summer term.
To The Top of the Beanstalk We Go!
During ‘b’ week the Kindergarten pupils planted bean seeds. They thought carefully about what the seeds would need to germinate then grow into healthy plants. They also took part in some role play, pretending to climb a beanstalk whilst their photographs were taken, and added colours of their choice to an outline of a castle. The classroom windowsills proved excellent locations and the pupils were delighted to observe firstly roots and shoots then a stem and leaves appear! The pupils think it hilarious that it now looks as though they are climbing their beanstalks to reach a castle: we hope they find lots of treasure when they arrive!
Springtime Flower Hunt!
Reception girls enjoyed a visit to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens as they went on a special hunt for signs of spring. Before their visit, the girls had been thinking about what botanical gardens are and why they are important places for growing and protecting plants from around the world.
As they explored, they were excited to spot beautiful blossom on the trees, bright yellow daffodils, colourful hyacinths and vibrant tulips beginning to bloom. The children carefully observed the flowers and talked about the changes they could see, noticing how spring brings new life and colour to the environment.
After their walk, the girls enjoyed some time playing together in the sunshine, making the most of the lovely weather!
Back in the classroom, they continued their learning by writing about their adventure and what they had seen. Well done to those who attempted our independent learning activity, where the challenge was to research unusual flowers and plants that grow in other countries!
Sandwich Success!
This week, Year One has been learning how to make and evaluate a healthy sandwich. In the lead up to this, the children designed their own sandwiches, wrote ingredient lists and drew their ideas from an aerial view. We began by sharing instructions as a class, creating a simple step-by-step guide on the board and following it together to make a sandwich. Next, the children made their own sandwiches using their designs. They showed great independence and enthusiasm while also learning about hygiene and safety, supported by adults at the chopping station. We then enjoyed eating our sandwiches together and finished by evaluating them, thinking about what we liked and how we could improve them next time. A fun (and tasty!) way to learn 😊
Year Two Become Brilliant Vehicle Designers!
Year Two have had an exciting week in Design and Technology, becoming budding designers as they created their very own vehicles. The girls began by learning all about how cars work, exploring the essential parts and understanding how each component helps a vehicle move. Using this knowledge, they carefully designed their own practical vehicles, thinking thoughtfully about how to make them both functional and creative. The girls worked incredibly hard to select suitable wheels, attach them securely to axles and ensure their vehicles could move smoothly. To finish their designs, the girls used a range of art materials to add detail and personality, practising their cutting skills to create windscreens and other features. Each vehicle was unique, showcasing both creativity and problem-solving skills.
It has been a truly fun and engaging project, with excitement and enthusiasm from start to finish. Well done, Year Two, for your fantastic designing and building!
Choral Day Fun!
Year Three and Four had a fantastic day last Friday, filled with creativity and collaboration. Alongside dressing up for Red Nose Day, they welcomed pupils from two local schools to take part in a special Choral Day. The children began by exploring a range of fun vocal warm-up activities, helping them develop confidence and technique. They then worked together to learn two well-loved songs from musicals: For Good from Wicked and When I Grow Up from Matilda. To make their performance even more meaningful, they incorporated sign language into the final section of For Good.
The day concluded with a wonderful performance for other Prep pupils, where they were joined by some Senior School girls—making it a truly memorable and uplifting experience for everyone involved.
Six Pillars of Faith
Year Four have been exploring how members of religious traditions look for answers to questions about the world. They have considered this through the lens of Islam, focusing on the Six Pillars of Faith as key beliefs that guide Muslims in their understanding of life. The children have been learning how these pillars help shape values, actions, and beliefs, and how sacred teachings and religious practices provide guidance and meaning in everyday life.
Young Artists Sculpt Their Own Likeness in Year Five Clay Portrait Project
Year Five girls have been putting their artistic skills to the test in an exciting art project that has seen them transform sketching techniques into detailed clay self-portraits. Over the past several weeks, the pupils have carefully studied their own facial features through drawing before transferring those observations into clay. Step by step, they shaped and refined their sculptures, paying close attention to details such as the curve of their noses, the shape of their eyes and the texture of their hair. The project encouraged the girls to think like real artists—observing closely, experimenting with techniques and patiently improving their work over time. Each portrait gradually developed into a unique representation of its creator.
Now that the sculptures are complete, the girls will be bringing them home for each family decide just how closely each clay creation resembles its young artist!
Magic Eggs and Tangram Patterns!
Year Six have had a wonderfully creative and mathematical week exploring our Magic Eggs. Linking geometry with art, pupils have been learning about the properties of circles while developing precise mathematical drawing skills. Using compasses and careful measurement, they designed and constructed egg shapes with intricate tangram patterns. Tangrams, which originated in ancient China over 1,000 years ago, challenged pupils to think spatially and problem-solve as they arranged the seven shapes to “hatch” imaginative birds, bringing a burst of creativity to their work.
As part of our Mother Language Day celebrations in February, the girls from Year One to Six produced a colourful poster of the Chinese animal linked to the year of their birth. Girls in Reception and Kindergarten decorated a horse mask to coincide with 2026 being the Year of the Fire Horse. The best Chinese animal from each year group was entered into an inter-school competition along with West House Prep and Monmouth Prep. The judge was the renowned author of French ‘Berthe the Witch’ story books, Gwen Brookes. After a rigorous process, which included consulting members of Gwen’s Art Class, the winning entries were chosen.
Finalists in EHS Prep were Ariana R in Year One for her Pig poster, Mandy in Year Two for her Dog poster and Meva in Year Three for her Dog poster. Sienna in Reception also received a certificate for her Horse Mask. The overall winners were all chosen by Gwen Brookes from EHS Prep! In third place was Hanna R in Year Four who created a striking and well-presented Rooster poster. In second place was Amaani in Year Six whose Goat was well-coloured and included the word for ‘goat’ in a huge variety of languages. In first place and the overall winner was Jashvita in Year Five whose Monkey poster caught Gwen’s eye with a well-coloured flag background and added foreign languages. The winners also received house points for their houses and a chocolate treat. The posters produced can be viewed on the display boards in Prep Hall.
A huge congratulations to our winners and to everyone who entered!
干得好 (Gàn dé hǎo)!
