Music is an integral part of life at EHS and Sixth Form musicians with special interests and talents are actively encouraged to participate in the wide variety of musical opportunities available. Those who wish to continue their musical studies beyond GCSE can pursue A Level Music. This course provides excellent preparation for further study at University or Conservatoire.

Those who wish to continue their musical studies beyond GCSE can pursue A Level Music. This course provides excellent preparation for further study at University or Conservatoire.

To study this subject you will need at least a Grade 6 in GCSE Music.

It is also recommended that you will have achieved at least a Grade 6 (ABRSM or equivalent) on your main instrument or voice. 

What will you learn?

In A-Level Music, you will develop your performance and composition skills while studying a wide range of musical styles and analysing how music is structured and interpreted.

Course Components

You will prepare a recital of one or more pieces lasting between 6-12 minutes, which is performed and recorded in a controlled assessment setting. Performances may be solo and/or ensemble and can include improvisation or realisation using Music Technology. 

You will submit two compositions, with a combined duration of 4-6 minutes. 

You will study a wide range of music through three areas of study:

  • Area of Study A: The Western Classical Tradition (The Development of the Symphony 1750–1900)
  • One area from: Rock and Pop, Musical Theatre, or Jazz
  • One further area from: Into the Twentieth Century or Into the Twenty-first Century Students will be expected to analyse set works, demonstrate wider listening, and apply your aural skills to unfamiliar music.

Experimenting with melody, harmony, rhythm, and texture.

Year 12 Music Scholarship

Each year, a Music Scholarship of up to 50% remission of fees is awarded to a student joining the Sixth Form. Open to both internal and external candidates, this scholarship recognises musical excellence and leadership potential. The Music Scholar is expected to take an active leadership role within the musical life of the school, encouraging others to participate, leading ensembles and representing the Music Department at public events. The successful candidate will be required to study A-Level Music.

How will you be assessed?

Eduquas

You have the opportunity to weight the Performing and Composing marks at 25% or 35% accordingly (standard is 35% Performing / 25% Composing). This option is available in consultation with the Director of Music and a string existing composition portfolio.

Performance

25/35% of grade

Performances are externally assessed. You will be be marked on technical control, accuracy, fluency, expression, and interpretation.

Composing

25/35% of grade

One composition is written to a brief set by Eduqas (either in the Western Classical Tradition, Musical Theatre, Rock & Pop, Jazz, or Film Music) and the other is a free composition. Both compositions are externally assessed.

Appraising

40% of grade

This is assessed through a two-hour written examination which includes listening, musical dictation, analysis, and essay questions.
