Success Continues for Debating Team

11 March 2016

We have had a very hectic time in the Debating calendar recently. Layla Chishti, Safa Amhed and Hannah Clutton-Brock took part in the English Speaking Union Public Speaking competition at King Edward’s School. Hannah also joined Sioned Gill, Emma Khan, and one of our debating captains, Dominique Al-Hindawi at Mander Portman for the Oxford Debating Competition.

After winning the first round of the English Speaking Union Mace Debating competition at Small Heath School, we ended up hosting the next two rounds, as our team of Malala Yousafzai and our other debating captain, Vinisha Katameni were just too successful! We made it to the regional final but unfortunately this marked the end of our winning streak. However, we all had an enjoyable evening being joined by Warwick, Solihull, Landau Forte and the University of Birmingham School as well as ex-students and former members of the debating club, Chloe Abutteir and Sumandeep Kailey. Chloe helped to keep time for one debate and passed the baton (or should I say stopwatch?) to Mariam Al-Ani for the next two. Sioned Gill chaired all three debates and was complimented on her ability to be a ‘cool chair’.

On Thursday 3 March we welcomed pupils from Small Heath School with their teacher Shahira Ghani to a special, extended debating club. We warmed up by playing Five Second Rule before moving on to the more serious debate which Dominque introduced. The motion was ‘This House would ban the wearing of religious symbols in school’ which led to a lively debate. It was lovely to see the girls from both schools mixing and just a shame that we did not have longer together.
