October 2026 So, you’re preparing for your GCSEs, and now you’re trying to decide on the right Sixth Form for you. For the first time, the decision on where to continue your education is in your hands! That’s a big decision, and to help make things easier, you can get a feel for the vibe by going to an open day.
An open day will give you the chance to find out what the Sixth Form is actually like, see the facilities, question the staff on their approach to education and chat to current sixth formers about their likes and dislikes. Open days can help you move from feeling anxious about the next step to being certain about your future.
What do you need from your time in Sixth Form?
Now that you’ve completed your secondary schooling, you will have a good idea of what you enjoyed and what you want to avoid in your further education. This applies not just to the classes you took, but also to the style of teaching and the school culture. Before you come to an open day, pop down on paper the things you loved; you can then use this as a checklist during your visit.
Start with the qualifications you would like to achieve. Are there courses you need for your preferred future career? Or are you still working that out, and you want to see what courses might be fun while expanding your mind? Prioritise your time visiting these classrooms and speaking to the students and academic staff. If you already have a clear idea of your direction, then you will know whether the teaching approach is right for you. If you’re still undecided, you will get a feel for the spirit of adventure and support you will receive from the staff.

An open day is a great opportunity to speak to people like you who have already been through Sixth Form. You can find out why they made their choices, how they decided and what life has been like since they started Sixth Form. You can ask sixth formers anything, which means you can really get under the skin of the school or college and get the true picture of student life at EHS. You can find out what’s expected from study and how supportive the school is; you can ask about support for mental health or pastoral care, or you can just find out how good the lunches are. Whatever you need to know, you can ask people who have already walked in your shoes. Open days are unique in providing a hands-on experience of the Sixth Form life you’ll enjoy when you register.

Spotlight on Sixth Form
Our Sixth Form Spotlights provide the opportunity to tour our Sixth Form Centre and meet the Head of Sixth Form. Spotlights are organised in a market-style format, and you will be able to find out more in-depth information about the subjects that you’re interested in studying after GCSEs. If you are struggling to choose all of your courses, then you can meet the teachers you would be learning from and ask for a subject introduction. Perhaps discovering a passion you didn’t know you had! Spotlights are shorter sessions than the open afternoons, but their informal market setup and specialised focus on subjects mean you can gain the information you need to decide on your next steps.
- 5.30pm – Arrivals and Refreshments
- 6pm – All About Sixth Form – a talk from The Head
- 6.30pm – Meet Student subject experts, the Sixth Form Leadership Team, chat to staff and learn more about Edgbaston High School’s Sixth Form.
