Edgbaston High School is delighted to have made the winners list at the Independent School of the Year Awards for Best Use of Education Technology. The award celebrates the imaginative ways technology enriches learning across the school, helping pupils develop creativity, confidence and the skills to turn their ideas into reality.
From Nursery through to Senior School, technology is woven into everyday learning. It brings new possibilities to familiar subjects, encourages collaboration and gives pupils opportunities to take ownership of their work.
In languages, green screen technology transforms the classroom into a French café, where pupils practise conversations in immersive environments they have created themselves. In Design and Technology, digital designs become physical objects through laser cutting, while in Art, Macs equipped with Adobe Creative Suite support sophisticated digital creativity alongside traditional techniques.
These foundations begin with our youngest learners. An interactive storytelling table brings stories to life in Nursery, while Prep pupils use Bee Bots and Spheros to explore navigation, problem-solving and programming. With OhBots, pupils connect coding with communication, programming facial expressions and interactions that combine technical understanding with imagination.
Across the school, one-to-one iPads help teachers respond to pupils’ needs, adapt activities and provide live feedback. Pupils can cast their work to interactive boards, sharing ideas, discussing different approaches and refining their thinking together.
Creative opportunities extend into Music, where pupils compose and produce using Logic, GarageBand and Sibelius. Stop-motion animation develops storytelling skills and patience, while drone workshops bring together technical precision and visual creativity. Pupils have also used drones to capture and produce footage celebrating the school’s 150th anniversary.
Some of the most powerful learning happens when pupils take the lead. Through the Octagon programme, they design and operate sound and lighting for performances, taking responsibility for the technology that brings events to life. These experiences build independence, teamwork and confidence as pupils solve problems and manage complex projects.
Underpinning this work is a commitment to thoughtful, responsible use of technology. As new tools emerge, including AI, pupils are encouraged to think critically, exercise judgement and use technology with purpose and integrity.
Winning this ISOTY award is a wonderful recognition of the creativity and commitment of our pupils and staff. It celebrates both the breadth of opportunity at Edgbaston High School and the thoughtful approach that gives technology its purpose: helping young people become confident learners, imaginative creators and responsible users of the tools that will shape their future.
