Year Six were delighted to take part in a virtual author visit with the award-winning writer Katherine Rundell.

It was an important day for Katherine, as she launches the second book in her Impossible Creatures series. During the event, Katherine read the exciting first chapter of the new book, which included the dramatic birth of a unicorn. Pupils were completely captivated by her vivid storytelling and imaginative ideas.

Katherine spoke about many of her previous books and explained how real-life adventures inspire her writing. To help make her stories as realistic as possible, she has learned to fly planes, swum with piranhas and even eaten a tarantula so she could describe the taste accurately in her writing. She explained that flying through clouds changes the taste of the air, which fascinated the children.

The session also explored descriptive writing, particularly when writing about food. Katherine shared examples of strange and memorable food combinations and discussed how writers can make descriptions more powerful by focusing on sensory detail.

Katherine also gave some simple but inspiring advice for young writers: write one sentence every day about the most interesting thing you saw or experienced. She explained that, by the end of the year, these sentences can become a collection of memories and ideas to inspire future writing.

At the end of the session, Year Six enjoyed asking Katherine questions about her books and her writing process. It was an inspiring experience, which left pupils full of creative ideas and excitement for writing.
