Edgbaston High School were delighted to take a group of Year 5 and 6 girls to the Girls’ Football Festival at Newman University earlier this month.
The afternoon proved to be a fantastic celebration of girls’ sport, providing a valuable opportunity for our pupils to develop their skills in a fun, supportive and inclusive environment.
From the moment we arrived, the girls showed great enthusiasm and a willingness to fully engage in all activities. The festival was led by a team of confident and inspiring sports leaders, who delivered a range of exciting skill-based stations. These sessions enabled the girls to practise key techniques such as passing, dribbling and shooting, while also encouraging creativity and enjoyment in their play.
A particular highlight of the afternoon was the opportunity to take part in small-sided games. These non-competitive matches allowed the girls to apply their skills in a relaxed setting, helping to build confidence and promote teamwork without the pressure of results. It was wonderful to see the girls supporting one another, communicating positively and celebrating each other’s efforts throughout.
The festival also formed part of a wider initiative to promote inclusivity in girls’ football, helping to inspire the next generation of players. The presence of Ella Bryan, CEO of ELLAVATE and a player for Derby County Women, added an exciting and aspirational element to the day, giving the girls a valuable insight into pathways within the sport.
Overall, the event was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience for all involved. We are incredibly proud of how the girls represented the school and hope that the festival has further inspired their interest and enthusiasm for football.
