This week, Year 9 have been reflecting on and celebrating the many wonderful aspects of friendship with a special focus on the power of female friendships.

The week began with a thought-provoking assembly titled The Power of Kindness. Students explored the quiet strength found in kindness and friendship, and were reminded that everyone carries unseen challenges, worries, pressures, hopes and fears that may not always be visible to others. While some people appear confident and well supported, others may feel invisible or be facing difficulties they do not show.

A key message from the assembly was that the difference between an ordinary day and a truly difficult one can often come down to just one person, one friend who notices, who stays, and who chooses kindness. Friendship and kindness were presented not simply as “nice” qualities, but as powerful forces that shape our daily experiences and have a meaningful impact on those around us.

Inspired by this message, the girls did not simply listen, they took action.

Each student made a personal pledge to carry out random acts of kindness. These thoughtful promises were written down and linked together to form a growing paper chain of kindness, now proudly displayed in school. The chains from every form create a striking visual reminder that one small act from each of us can combine to form something much greater. Together, these simple gestures help to build a culture of care, support, love, friendship and positivity throughout our school community.

The celebrations continued with a vibrant Galentines lunchtime charity event that truly captured the spirit of friendship. Colourful individual roses were sold as a thoughtful way to show appreciation to family, friends and those who make everyday life that little bit brighter. A charm and jewellery stall added sparkle to the occasion, offering special gifts for friends, while creative stations provided opportunities to design heartfelt cards and personalised gift tags for Galentines presents. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Pancreatic Cancer UK and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

The event took place against the backdrop of a lively, friendship-focused Galentines playlist, creating an atmosphere filled with smiles, laughter and a strong sense of connection.

This week demonstrated that kindness and friendship are more than kind words, they are actions. When everyone contributes their own small gesture, the result is something truly special. One promise, one rose, one charm, one card at a time, Year 9 showed that a little kindness really does go a long way.
