On Tuesday 1 October, a group of Year 12 students took part in an exciting Architecture Workshop at Birmingham City University (BCU), with a special focus on landscape architecture.

The day began with a warm welcome from university tutors, who introduced students to the subject and shared insights into what it’s like to study landscape architecture at BCU. Inspiring talks were given by expert tutors Andrew Trujillo, Emma Widdop, and Dr Sana Malik, who spoke about their own journeys in the world of design and architecture.

Students then took on a creative challenge: to design and build a model of an outdoor pavilion. Using simple materials like paper, card, and glue, they were encouraged to think carefully about the location, purpose, and structure of their designs. Once completed, the students presented their models to the university tutors, who were very impressed by the quality and imagination on display.

Among the standout ideas were a shelter designed for Mount Everest, a peaceful yoga space raised above the ground, a climbing frame shaped like a spider’s web, and a relaxing waterside retreat inspired by nature. The tutors praised the students for their creativity, enthusiasm, and attention to detail.

After the hands-on workshop, students enjoyed a guided tour of BCU’s architecture and fashion studios. This included a look at current student projects and a chance to see some of the university’s high-tech facilities in action, such as 3D printers and CNC machines.

Overall, the visit was a fun and inspiring experience. It gave students a real taste of what it’s like to study architecture at university and opened their eyes to the wide range of careers available in the world of design and the built environment.
