On Monday 15 June, two teams of Year 12 Psychology students attended the prestigious Royal Holloway University of London to take part in their annual Psychology Competition. This is a prestigious competition with both International and UK based schools competing.
In preparation for the competition, students were tasked with creating a two-minute video and an academic poster answering the question, ‘How can psychology help us build a healthier and stronger community?’
Students had to give a short presentation about their research to two independent judges from the department of Psychology. Both groups did incredibly well, exploring the question from very different perspectives and answering questions posed from the judges.
I am delighted to report that Freya M, Holly G and Isabelle S beat 60 other teams to win the category of ‘Best Video 2026’. Their research explored current affairs which highlight weakened communities and then applied concepts of Social Identity Theory to suggest potential ways of overcoming such divisions.
Following this, students attended an undergraduate lecture from Dr Elitza Ambrus on cognitive biases in decision-making, in which she examined ‘anchoring’ and how exposure to an initial value leads to biases in subsequent judgements. They then attended a Q&A session with current under- and post-graduate students exploring University life, degree choices and the benefits of being involved in student societies.
