This week, we have considered what the true recipe for success might be.
We know that a child’s progress is not always linear. At times they will make rapid academic progress, they may be that they make rapid personal progress or a combination of the two. At times, they may appear to be slowing down and this, as parents, can be concerning. We all remember learning to ride a bike, the energy and concentration it took, the frustration felt and the guiding hand needed on the back of a saddle or perhaps the, slightly wonky, stabilisers to build confidence. We also know how wonderful it was to finally pedal freely, to know that you had ‘got it’. Those feeling brave enough would attempt to ride ‘hands free’, but this inevitably would result in the return of a wobble. A child’s academic learning journey is no different. They will require initial help and reassurance. They will, at times, require a guiding hand or scaffolded support. They will, at times, start to wobble and seemingly forget everything they thought they already knew.
For us, as educators, this is the joy of teaching. The unpredictability of the whole journey. The need to adapt and change to support each individual. I actively encourage my staff to reflect on their practice. To think outside the box and to aim high for each every individual. I know my staff believe in the girls. I know that they want the best for each and every one of them. But, it is only once the pupil begins to believe in themselves that the real magic happens. Belief, hard work, dedication and a little bit of magic brings the best out of everyone.
Many of our girls have been out on curriculum adventures this week, with visits to the SeaLife Centre, Smite Farm, The Botanical Gardens and the school allotment. My staff have inspired and cared for the girls in equal measure. They know the girls and they are passionate about supporting them to make the best possible progress.
So, this week, as we reflect on the assessments, we will work with the girls to identify areas of challenge. To find ways in which further progress can be made and consider strategies to help the next stage and beyond. As our Year Six girls enjoy their final few weeks with us in the Prep School, I have been delighted to see them continuing to embrace every opportunity available to them with joy and determination. We know that happy children succeed and, if the smiles on the faces of Year Six as they competed in the House Gala, as they explored the Botanical Gardens, as they designed ambitious and creative advertising leaflets, as they proudly walked into the Assembly Hall, are anything to go by, then they are set for success!
Have a wonderful weekend.
