The Hexagon was bathed in glorious summer sunshine on Thursday 21 May as students, staff and families gathered for a truly memorable Senior Performing Arts Spotlight evening. The concert celebrated the extraordinary range of talent across the school, showcasing performances of exceptional maturity and confidence.
The atmosphere throughout the evening was warm and uplifting, with students performing a wonderfully varied programme spanning musical theatre, classical repertoire, folk-inspired works and contemporary pieces. From polished solo performances to collaborative ensemble work, the concert demonstrated not only technical accomplishment, but also creativity, expression and courage on stage.
A particular highlight of the evening was the debut performance of the flute ensemble’s original piece New Horizons, specially written for the group by visiting Music Teacher, Miss Jones. Performed beautifully by Grace G, Anabel V and Erin Col and Eliza M, the piece provided a fitting opening to the evening and showcased the strength of the school’s growing ensemble programme.
There were many standout solo moments throughout the concert. Eliza M delivered a confident flute performance of On the Bayou, before Eliza S took to the stage with an engaging guitar rendition of Blackbird Blues. Leela C impressed with a thoughtful and expressive interpretation of Times Are Hard for Dreamers from Amélie: The Musical, while Grace B captivated the audience with a recital-standard performance of As If We Never Said Goodbye from Sunset Boulevard.
Instrumental performances were equally compelling. Erica LY’s sensitive piano interpretation contrasted beautifully with Fei LY’s elegant performance of the theme from Pride and Prejudice. Grace D’s cello performance added further depth and richness to the programme and was a mature and confident opener.
The evening also celebrated the power of collaboration and storytelling through song. Grace, Ellie and Emily gave a heartfelt rendition of Some Things Are Meant To Be from Little Women, while Ellie K’s moving performance of Slipping Through My Fingers created a reflective moment within the programme. Vocal performances from Ava R (Under The Greenwood Tree) and Raya W (Grow For Me) brought more magic to the concert and highlighted the breadth of genres that are encouraged and celebrated.
Special thanks must go to Ms Feng for her outstanding accompanying throughout the evening, to Miss Jones for her work with the flute ensemble and composition of New Horizons, and to all of the Music Department staff whose hard work and support helped make the event such a success.
The Senior Performing Arts Spotlight was a wonderful reminder of the creativity, dedication and confidence of our students. Whether performing for the first time or delivering polished recital-standard interpretations, every student contributed to an evening full of character, professionalism and joy. Congratulations to all performers and staff involved in such a fabulous celebration of the performing arts.
