We were privileged to be able to view Aaron Sorkin's well regarded stage production of the iconic novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, in the Hippodrome Theatre. A range of students from Years 10–12 who have studied the novel in-depth found the production challenging and stimulating.
There were certain differences from the original novel which connected with many of the issues which face us today in 2026. Here are the thoughts of a sample of those who attended:
Elsie in Year 12 said that it was "a moving and thought-provoking production."
Kiri-Anmol in Year 12 said that, "I found the trip both enjoyable and nostalgic, and I really appreciated the chance to revisit a story I thoroughly enjoyed during GCSE English."
Susie in Year 10 said, "I found the play incredibly thought-provoking; I particularly enjoyed the actors of Atticus and Calpurnia's performances, I thought that they were especially convincing towards the pinnacle of the play."
Sarah in Year 10, "Aaron Sorkin perfectly adapts the classic into a dramatic and moving piece of theatre. The acting was phenomenal, and no line felt out of place. Some characters, including Dill and Calpurnia, felt like they'd been well expanded upon and allowed the audience to empathise with their experiences."
Being able to see the play and reflect on the differences between that and the novel was a fantastic opportunity to enrich the learning of our English pupils, something that we highly value here at Edgbaston High School.
