On Tuesday 24 February 2026, our Year 10 pupils enjoyed an exciting and inspiring day at GCSE Science Live!, held at the impressive Symphony Hall in Birmingham.

The event brought together leading scientists and communicators from across the UK, giving students a valuable opportunity to experience science beyond the classroom and to see where their GCSE studies could take them in the future.

Throughout the day, pupils listened to a series of engaging and thought-provoking talks from five expert speakers:

  • Robert Winston – A distinguished medical doctor, scientist and Professor of Fertility Studies, who spoke about advances in reproductive science and their profound impact on society.
  • Jim Al-Khalili – A theoretical physicist and well-known science broadcaster, who explored big ideas in physics, including the nature of time and the fascinating possibilities and limitations of time travel.
  • Gilly Forrester – An environmental scientist and science communicator, who shared insights into ecology and conservation, highlighting the importance of sustainability and the vital role young people can play in protecting our planet.
  • Tim Gabriel – A science educator and presenter, who delivered an energetic and thought-provoking session linking key GCSE concepts to real-world applications and emerging technologies.
  • Emma Chapman – An astrophysicist whose research focuses on cosmology and the early universe, inspiring students with fascinating insights into space exploration and the origins of the cosmos.

In addition to the inspiring talks, pupils also received invaluable examination advice from Stewart Chenery, an experienced chief examiner. He shared practical strategies for maximising marks and approaching GCSE science papers with confidence, guidance that will be particularly reassuring for both students and parents as the GCSE years progress.

The atmosphere in the hall was electric, with our pupils fully engaged and eager to deepen their understanding. Events such as this reinforce key scientific ideas from the GCSE curriculum while broadening horizons, helping students to appreciate the wide range of careers and opportunities that science can offer.

It was a truly inspiring and motivating experience, and we are incredibly proud of the way our Year 10 pupils represented the school. Their enthusiasm, curiosity and exemplary behaviour throughout the day were a credit to themselves and to our school community.
