Young Analysts Launch Thought-Provoking Debate

Our new Year Six club, Young Analysts, brings together some of the Prep School’s most able girls each week to discuss current affairs and global events. The aim is to stretch academically able pupils by encouraging them to think critically, voice opinions confidently and navigate differences of perspective.

This week, the Young Analysts explored two significant changes on the horizon for UK democracy: the proposal to give sixteen-year-olds the right to vote in all elections and the plan for schools to provide more lessons on democracy, voting and how the country is run.

The girls debated the pros and cons with great energy. Several argued that sixteen-year-olds are informed, socially aware and ready to take part in shaping the nation’s future. Others raised thoughtful concerns that young voters might be swayed by parental views or peer pressure. The discussion demonstrated their ability to listen, challenge and build on each other’s points.

To deepen their understanding, the group examined famous votes from around the world, including the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, South Africa’s first democratic election and the Brexit referendum. They considered which decisions had the greatest impact on people’s lives and why these moments mattered.

Young Analysts is already proving to be a stimulating space where our most able Year Six girls can grapple with complex ideas, learn the art of respectful debate and develop a nuanced understanding of the world around them.
