Creative curiosity
As the temperature dipped this week, we took inspiration from the colder weather and the Nursery girls explored a variety of media to create winter-inspired art. Using icy blues, crisp whites and sparkling silvers, they captured the beauty of the season ahead. Their creativity shone through as they layered and mixed their media, and it was a great opportunity to support their physical development as they experimented with different tools to make a variety of marks. Their lovely artwork is now proudly displayed in our room.

Future engineers!
It’s ‘g’ week in Kindergarten so one of our activities has focussed on the traditional tale of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. The pupils started by watching a musical retelling of the story, they loved joining in with the ‘who’s that trip, trapping over my bridge’ repeated refrain! They were then presented with a range of construction materials and a challenge: what could they build to help three toy billy goats cross a sparkly river? The staff were impressed by the pupils’ ability to try different strategies and turn difficulties encountered into learning experiences. There are future engineers in Kindergarten!

Word Building
This week in Reception, the focus was on the tricky digraphs ai, ee and oa, along with the trigraph igh. Children practised saying the sounds, building words and started to use the sounds in their writing. They also enjoyed reading sessions where they searched for these sounds in decodable books, spotting ai in rain, igh in night and ee in tree. A brilliant week of blending, segmenting and sound-spotting!

Queens of the road!
This week, in Geography, Year One have been finding out about the importance of road safety. The girls have been learning the Green Cross Code and how important it is to STOP, LOOK LISTEN and THINK before crossing the road. We set up a road in the school playground, complete with a zebra crossing. Some of the girls were the traffic, whilst others were pedestrians in their high-viz jackets. A favourite activity for the girls was taking it in turns to be the lollipop lady. The lollipop lady had to get the traffic to stop before allowing the pedestrians to cross safely at the zebra crossing. We hope the girls will remember these important skills for life.

Diving into Creativity
Year Two have been diving into creativity this week as they wrote about their recent swimming lesson. The girls thoroughly enjoyed their time in the pool practising their front crawl and backstroke and channelled that into their writing. Their recounts were filled with confident voices and lovely details about their swimming lesson, showcasing some amazing work. Well done girls!

Roman Mosaics
Year Three have designed and created their own Roman mosaic tiles this week as part of their cross-curricular learning in History, Art and Computing. They used Colour Magic to plan their designs, aiming for a symmetrical, repeating pattern. The girls then carefully constructed their tiles and should feel very proud of their impressive final results.

Perfect pumpkins!
Year Four have been exploring shading and tone in still-life pictures. The girls took pumpkins from our very own allotment (Thank you Mrs Hobbs!) and used pencil to create some fantastic pieces of art work. First they drew a light, pencil shape, then added definition with different shading and tonal pencils varying from HB to 6B. Pupils used various techniques such as cross-hatching and ink wash. These techniques are used for both pencil and colour pictures, giving the shape a 3D-life. Well done, Year Four!

Year Five Master Measurement with Hands-On Maths
Year Five have been hard at work this week developing their measuring skills through a series of practical challenges focused on reading scales and converting between grams and kilograms. The classroom was filled with activity as pupils explored a range of weighing equipment. Using practical apparatus helped pupils deepen their understanding of accuracy and place value. They practised converting between grams and kilograms, discussing strategies to ensure they recorded measurements correctly and avoided common errors. Working in pairs and small groups, pupils supported each other in reading scales carefully, checking results and explaining their methods. Teachers were delighted to see how enthusiastically the children engaged with the hands-on tasks. Using real equipment made the maths feel more meaningful and easier to understand. By the end of the week, Year Five demonstrated growing confidence in reading scales, understanding units of mass, and converting between them — a valuable step in strengthening their wider mathematical skills.

Clay masterpieces!
Inspired by the vibrant work of ceramicist Clarice Cliff, Year Six pupils have been busy creating their own clay masterpieces. Using the slabbing technique, they learned how to shape and securely join pieces of clay to construct open box forms. Pupils then experimented with a range of mark-making methods to add texture and detail before applying pottery-painting techniques to decorate their creations. The final pieces are colourful and full of individuality- a wonderful celebration of Year Six creativity and skill. As part of the project, pupils also developed their understanding of the benefits of self-evaluation in Art. They discovered how reflecting on their own work can increase ownership, motivation and confidence, while helping them build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. By considering their strengths and identifying areas for improvement, Year Six pupils are becoming more reflective, independent and capable young artists.
