Girls in Prep have been immersing themselves in engaging and challenging activities across the school this week!

Super Sight Detectives!

Nursery have been focusing on their sight as we begin to explore how to use our senses. The girls have shown great fascination in using mirrors and magnifying glasses to inspect and enhance their features; bellies of laughter have filled the room whilst peering into the mirrors and experimenting with making different faces. They took their magnifying glasses outside for a wander around the school grounds where they discovered ladybirds, ants and the first signs of Autumn – lots of beautiful, colourful leaves! Nursery have been super sight detectives.

Colour predictions

Kindergarten pupils have had fun learning about colour mixing whilst getting messy!  Each pupil chose a colour to paint their right hand and a different colour to paint their left hand.  After creating two handprints, they rubbed their palms together and observed the colour created.  The pupils predicted what colour they would create based on their previous experience.  Their work is now proudly displayed on the classroom walls.

Muscles workout

In Reception, girls have been thinking about how exercise helps to keep their bodies healthy and strong. Whether that is running, jumping, dancing or playing games in PE, they are giving their hearts and muscles a great workout! Girls have learned that when they move more, their heart rate goes up because their hearts have to work harder to pump blood and oxygen around their bodies, especially to their muscles. They have also noticed that they breathe faster during exercise, which helps their bodies get more oxygen too.

Counting Superstars!

Year One have been busy becoming counting experts! The girls have been working hard to count accurately up to 20 and this week they had lots of fun in a hands-on Mathematics lesson. Using all sorts of exciting classroom items including buttons, beads, paper clips, cubes, straws, LEGO and lolly sticks, the girls practised careful counting, making sure every item was included.

Why not keep the fun going at home? Encourage your daughter to count everyday objects like socks, apples, stairs or toys — it’s a great way to build confidence and strengthen her number skills!

Island Explorers

Year Two have been exploring where Katie Morag lives and learning all about island life. They've been thinking about what it's like to live on an island compared to the mainland and have started to look closely at different geographical features such as villages, mountains and the pier. Using Digimaps, the children located the Isle of Coll (the island Struay is based on) and compared its location to Birmingham, noticing the differences in size and setting. The girls have created some maps identifying the geographical features.

Science Rocks!

Year Three have enjoyed finding out about rocks in their Science lessons. They explored how different types of rocks are formed deep beneath our feet and got hands-on with a variety of rock samples. By closely observing their textures, colours and patterns, pupils identified key characteristics and began to understand what makes each rock unique. They also investigated the many ways rocks are used in everyday life — from building materials to kitchen countertops. Pupils particularly enjoyed handling real rock specimens and were fascinated by fossils!

Environmental impact

This week, our curious Year Five geographers have been busy investigating something we all encounter every day—food packaging! As part of their Geography lessons, the children have been exploring where our food comes from and the ways it is packaged before it reaches our plates. They compared labels, looked closely at nutritional information and spotted symbols showing recycling instructions and ingredients. The investigation also sparked thoughtful discussions about the impact of packaging on the environment. Pupils debated the pros and cons of plastic wrapping versus cardboard and many suggested creative ideas for how packaging could be made more sustainable.

Year Six Girls Shine in STEM IGNITE

Year Six girls are thoroughly enjoying their IGNITE sessions this term. In STEM IGNITE this week, they explored coding with Micro:bits to create working pedometers. After learning how to program the devices, the girls tested their designs by tracking their own steps, then refined their code to improve accuracy. The classroom buzzed with excitement as they debugged programs, shared ideas and celebrated each successful step count. These hands-on sessions are sparking curiosity, building problem-solving skills and showing how coding can be creative and fun. Year 6 can’t wait to see what the next IGNITE challenge will bring!
