This week, our Year 13 Biology students took part in their much anticipated annual field trip to Bishops Wood Field Centre. The trip was a fantastic opportunity for students to put their classroom learning into action, exploring the natural world and taking part in real scientific research.
Throughout the visit, students carried out a variety of ecological sampling techniques. These methods are used to collect important data about the biodiversity of the area, information which is then shared nationally to help scientists and conservationists understand how best to protect our natural environments.
As part of their A Level studies, the students also completed a required practical investigation, examining how an environmental factor affects the distribution of a particular species. This hands-on experience not only supported their academic learning but also gave them a deeper appreciation for the complexity of natural ecosystems.

We were lucky to enjoy fabulous weather during the trip, so warm in fact, that most coats stayed behind in the classroom! Unfortunately, due to the long, hot summer, the pond habitats at the centre had become too fragile, meaning pond dipping was not possible this year. As responsible young ecologists, the students made the decision to avoid any activity that might further disturb the delicate environment.
Instead, the group explored the diversity of plant life in various meadow areas and studied how woodland conditions affect species like brambles. These investigations gave valuable insight into how different environments support different forms of life.
Overall, it was an incredibly worthwhile and enjoyable field trip. As well as developing practical skills and deepening their understanding of ecology, many students came away feeling inspired by the wide range of career opportunities in environmental science and conservation.
