The end of this first half term is on the horizon, but that hasn't stopped the EHS Prep girls having another fantastic week of learning, playing and achieving big.
Vibrant artwork!
The Nursery girls worked collaboratively as they combined their efforts on some junk-model artwork! They began by adding paint to the different materials, using both big and small strokes to add vibrant colours. Afterwards, they added collage pieces which enhanced the 3D effect wonderfully. This encouraged teamwork and communication as the girls shared their ideas as well as developing their fine motor skills and creativity. The finished piece is proudly displayed in the Nursery room for all to see!

Investigating insects!
Every week, Kindergarten pupils focus on a different letter sound. This week's focus is the letter 'i'. The preceding weekend, the focus letter is shared on Seesaw and the pupils are encouraged to photograph items starting with this at home and in their local area. The teachers were impressed that pupils had found Italian food, indigo items and even an iguana amongst many other interesting items this week. Pupils can bring one item in to share with their peers and display on our ‘letter sound of the week’ table so this week our table features insects, instruments and a soft toy which is feeling ill! Keep up the great work, Kindergarten pupils!

Keeping safe when out and about
As part of our topic work on Healthy Selves, Reception have been learning all about keeping safe when out and about. The children talked about people who help us, including the police, paramedics, doctors, fire fighters, the RNLI and coastguards. They also took part in practical road safety activities, showing how to Stop, Look, Listen and Think before crossing the road. The children enjoyed writing and drawing about people who help us and have shown great understanding of how to stay safe at home, near roads and by the sea!

Inspiring artist
Year One have had a fantastic time learning all about the amazing Alma Thomas, as part of Black History Month! Alma Thomas was a truly inspiring artist who overcame many challenges during her life. She made history by becoming one of the first black women to have her artwork displayed in an art gallery. Today, her colourful paintings are worth millions of pounds, and even former U.S. President Barack Obama had some of her artwork in the White House! The girls in Year One created their own fact files all about Alma Thomas, thinking carefully about the challenges she might have faced. They also had a go at painting in her unique, vibrant style. The girls have loved celebrating her creativity, courage and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Investigating senses!
Year Two have been busy learning all about their senses. First, they explored their sense of touch, using their hands to feel and describe different items — such s an ice cube being cold and slimy! Next, they tested their sense of smell by trying to identify various scents, including coffee, banana and mints. The children did brilliantly and had a thoughtful discussion about why some people might have a better sense of smell than others. The girls are now very excited to continue their investigations by exploring their sense of taste next!

Mass challenges
Year Three girls have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in hands-on activities linked to their Mathematics topic on mass. They worked together to solve real-life mass challenges using balance and kitchen scales. Their investigations involved comparing the weights of sand and water, ordering objects from lightest to heaviest and weighing different types of food. Great work, Year Three!

Exploring Co-ordinates and Translations
This week in Mathematics, Year Four have been learning all about co-ordinates and translations. The girls demonstrated fantastic teamwork as they used peer-to-peer teaching to reinforce their understanding and explain concepts to one another. They particularly enjoyed using the White Rose Infinity app to explore how shapes move and translate across different quadrants. Once confident, the girls moved on to reasoning and problem-solving challenges designed to stretch and deepen their understanding. Their enthusiasm, collaboration, and growing confidence in using mathematical language have been wonderful to see. Well done, Year Four!

The world of fashion!
To mark Black History Month, Year Five girls learned about Edward Enninful, the first Black editor of British Vogue. Inspired by his story and his love of creativity and diversity in fashion, the girls designed their own fashion magazine front covers, each featuring a unique piece of headwear they created themselves. Their designs celebrate individuality, culture and imagination — just like Edward’s work in the fashion world.

Determination and Resilience
Year Six have been learning about Lilian Bader as part of our Black History Month focus. She was an inspiring woman who became one of the first Black women to join the British armed forces during the Second World War. The girls were fascinated to learn about her determination and resilience, especially how she overcame discrimination to achieve her dreams. We explored her incredible journey from being turned away because of her race to becoming a leading aircraftwoman after coming top of her class in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). The girls reflected on her courage and perseverance by writing thoughtful diary entries from her perspective and creating beautiful artwork to celebrate her life and achievements.
