This week, our Year 10 students enjoyed the opportunity to support Year 9 pupils during the Big Sister, Little Sister Breakfast, an event focused on one of the most important milestones in their school journey: choosing GCSE options.
The session was designed to be informal, honest and reassuring, helped along by the shared enjoyment of pain au chocolate.

Year 10 students reflected on their own experiences of the options process, speaking openly about what they found exciting, challenging and, at times, surprising. They discussed how it felt to make subject choices a year ago, acknowledging that the process can seem daunting at first, while emphasising that it also provides a valuable opportunity to shape a curriculum around individual strengths and interests.
A key focus of the discussion was the introduction of new subjects at GCSE. Year 10 students explained what these subjects are like in practice, how they differ from Key Stage 3, and which skills are most useful for success. Hearing these insights from peers currently studying the courses helped Year 9 students gain a clearer and more realistic understanding than a prospectus alone can offer.
Workload and balance were also important topics. Year 10 students shared practical advice on organising homework, revising little and often, and learning how to prioritise effectively without becoming overwhelmed. They were keen to reassure Year 9 that while GCSE study requires greater independence, there is plenty of support available and time to adjust.
Perhaps most valuable was the guidance on choosing subjects wisely: selecting courses that spark genuine interest, play to personal strengths, and keep future pathways open, rather than simply following friends. The relaxed atmosphere, supported by the breakfast setting, encouraged open conversation, thoughtful questions and plenty of smiles.
Overall, the event was a positive and supportive experience that highlighted the strength of our school community and the value of students learning from one another.
