Ms Jones-Owen’s Year 8 English class have been immersing themselves in George Orwell’s Animal Farm, but not just through reading.

The students have been hard at work transforming the political allegory into a vibrant stage production of their own making.

Working in groups, they adapted key chapters into dramatic scripts, thinking carefully about how Orwell’s themes of power, corruption, and leadership could be brought to life through performance. From Squealer’s persuasive speeches to Napoleon’s rise to power, each group captured the energy and tension of life on Manor Farm.

To complement their performances, pupils designed and created striking character masks, using colour, texture, and expression to reflect the personalities of the animals. This creative process helped them think more deeply about characterisation, symbolism, and Orwell’s message about equality and control.

Ms Jones-Owen said, “The students have shown such imagination and understanding of the text. Seeing them interpret complex ideas through drama and art has been brilliant.”
