Year Three stepped back in time to experience life as Roman soldiers at Lunt Roman fort.
Year Three had a fantastic day at Lunt Roman Fort, stepping back in time to experience life as a Roman soldier. The day began with a dramatic welcome from two Roman soldiers guarding the fort. After giving a secret password, the girls were granted entry through the main gates.
The adventure started with a lesson on Roman defence tactics against the invading Celts. The girls climbed the wooden fort to peer into the defensive ditches and examined ancient artefacts such as caltrops and slingshots. They also explored what it was like to be part of the Roman Army, viewing examples of Roman armour and uniforms, as well as the shields and weapons used in battle.
Inside the museum, the girls had the opportunity to handle Roman games, jewellery, and even weapons, giving them a hands-on insight into Roman life.
After lunch, it was time to prepare for training in the fort’s circular training ring, known as the gyrus. The session began with learning how to march to Latin commands — sin (left) and dex (right). The girls then practised drawing their swords, using their shields, and developing their battle technique, all under the watchful eyes of their commanding officers. They even went into combat with a partner to test their skills.
To end the session, the girls worked in teams to practise Roman battle formations before putting everything they had learned into action in a final group battle.
It was a wonderful day filled with learning and excitement. The girls demonstrated excellent behaviour throughout and gained a fascinating insight into the life of Roman soldiers.
