Nursery to Year Six Highlights
Oats so Lovely!
This week the girls in Nursery enjoyed baking some delicious oat and raisin cookies! They were encouraged to listen carefully to instructions whilst following the recipe, so they didn’t miss a step. Throughout the activity, the girls took turns and worked cooperatively, developing their social skills and learning the importance of teamwork. It also allowed them to practice measuring, pouring, scooping and stirring to support their physical development.
What's Your Superpower?
Kindergarten pupils have been so excited about Superhero Day! As well as planning their outfits at home, they prepared for the special day at school. The teachers shared the story of Elmer with the pupils and they learned that one-of-a-kind Elmer’s superpower was making the other elephants laugh. Each pupil then had the opportunity to create a unique superhero mask. During Kindergarten’s daily ‘discussion and story time’ sessions, the pupils considered what their own superpowers were. It was heart-warming to hear qualities such as ‘putting my coat on by myself’, ‘being a good friend’, ‘making people happy’ and ‘having nice manners’ being shared, especially when the pupils were suggesting these to their peers. A display is being created to mark the occasion, and the staff look forward to sharing this with Kindergarten families very soon.
All About Africa!
This week, Reception girls have been busy learning all about Africa as part of their topic work. The children explored beautiful Kenyan art patterns, looking closely at the colours, shapes and repeating designs. They then had a go at creating their own patterns inspired by what they had seen. The girls also learned about deserts and discussed their main characteristics, such as hot temperatures, very little rainfall and the types of animals and plants that can survive there. A highlight of the week was girls coming together to retell the story Handa’s Surprise. The children loved sequencing the events and acting out the story, showing great enthusiasm and developing their storytelling skills. We were also very lucky to have a special sharing moment when one pupil, inspired by our work in class, brought in a hand-painted piece of Fijian tree bark to show how similar the patterns were to the African patterns we had explored earlier in the week. She very much enjoyed sharing her thoughts and experiences of Fiji!
Perfect Paintings
Year One have been busy learning all about their amazing bodies in our weekly Science lessons! This week, the girls had great fun painting self-portraits in their school uniforms, carefully choosing just the right colours for their hair, eyes and skin. The creativity didn’t stop there. They also wrote all about themselves to go alongside their pictures. We were so impressed with the super sentences they produced, remembering those all-important capital letters and full stops. What a fantastic week of learning!
Descriptive stories with a twist!
Year Two have been exploring The Very Hungry Caterpillar through both Art and English. In Art, the girls learned how to sketch their caterpillars, starting with pencil outlines before carefully painting them using thin paintbrushes. Their finished creations were fantastic. In English, the girls retold the story, using adjectives to practise their descriptive writing. They all did an amazing job. Next week, the girls will write their own versions of the story, adding creative twists.
French Green Screen
Year Three pupils have been busy practising their French skills. They have been learning how to name different foods and drinks in French and how to order confidently in a café, including how to ask for the bill. To bring their learning to life, the girls took part in a fun role-play activity, taking on the roles of waitresses and customers. Using the green screen, pupils transported themselves to a French café setting. This week, they had the exciting opportunity to watch their finished videos with the background added and they were pleased to see the results.
Sharing stories sparks a love of reading
Year Four girls are developing a strong love of reading by sharing book recommendations and enjoying books together during quiet moments of the school day. Whether swapping favourite stories with friends or settling down with a book during calm classroom times, the pupils are discovering the pleasure of reading for enjoyment. Shared reading experiences are helping to build vocabulary and deepen understanding of language, while also enriching creativity and imagination. Most importantly, the girls are learning the joy of losing themselves in another world through stories. By talking about books and reading together, the girls are not only strengthening friendships, but also building a lifelong love of reading that will support learning across all areas.
Independent scientists
During comprehension lessons this week, Year Five girls became scientists as they carefully followed a set of instructions to complete a chromatography experiment. The girls showed great focus, reading each step closely and following the instructions to the letter. This careful approach led to some interesting and colourful results, helping the girls to realise just how important skills such as attention to detail, accuracy and patience are. Later this week, the girls will be putting these skills into practice again by writing their own sets of instructions for making their favourite sandwiches. Hopefully trying the results at home too. A tasty and educational week all round!
Friction Slopes
As part of their learning on forces, our Year Six scientists designed and carried out their own investigations into friction. Many pupils used adjustable ramps with different materials, carefully measuring the angle at which a 1kg mass began to slide as friction was overcome. The girls were impressive in their independence; accurately identifying variables, writing clear and detailed methods, and analysing their findings using beautifully presented graphs. They confidently explained any anomalous results and proposed imaginative ideas for extending their investigations. This experiment showcased the excellent practical and analytical skills they have developed throughout their Prep journey.
