Our EHS Values are integral to every aspect of school life, with creativity being particularly in evidence across the Prep School this week.

All aboard!

The girls in Nursery have begun an exciting new topic on transport. This week, they explored how to use 2D shapes to replicate pictures of different vehicles, carefully selecting and arranging the shapes to match what they could see. As they worked, the girls practiced recognising and naming the 2D shapes they used, such as squares, triangles, and rectangles. They then extended their learning by creating their own vehicle designs, choosing how to arrange the shapes independently. This activity helped to develop problem-solving skills, encouraged creativity, and supported their early understanding of shape and space.

Opportunities galore!

It’s been a fabulous first week of the new term for Kindergarten. There has been a birthday to celebrate, a new small world and block play area to explore and the introduction of ‘traditional tale of the week’ to enhance oral story-telling skills. The pupils were delighted to discover that a replica supermarket had appeared in the role play area and have relished the opportunity to take on both the role of sales assistant and customer, promoting entertaining conversations and highlighting the pupils’ warm inclusivity. Another highlight has been the return to the onsite swimming pool.  It is a pleasure to share the delight the pupils experience during their weekly swimming lesson and the progress they have made since September is wonderful. The range of water activities on offer combined with a high adult to pupil ratio mean that every pupil builds on their water skills whilst having fun. Great work Kindergarten!

Around the World: England and the UK

This week, Reception started their new topic Around the World. They began by learning about England and the rest of the United Kingdom. First, they found England on a globe and then on a map of the UK. They learned that the UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Girls discovered that the UK is an island with water all around it. In science, they talked about the climate in England and discussed England having four seasons. Girls were reminded that the clothes we wear and the activities we do can change with the seasons. In literacy, the classes shared the story The Oak Tree by British author Julia Donaldson. The story tells us about a big oak tree and the animals that live in it throughout the year. We talked about how the oak tree changes in each season and how it is an important part of nature in England. Reception are excited to keep learning about different places around the world!

Playing with Patterns!

The Year One girls have been busy exploring the exciting world of repeated patterns in their Mathematics lessons this week! To make learning even more meaningful and enjoyable, a cross-curricular approach was taken, linking Mathematics with Art and play-based learning. The girls were challenged to create their own repeated patterns by printing with paints and carefully organising a variety of toys, making sure their designs followed a clear repeating sequence. This hands-on activity encouraged creativity, problem-solving  and teamwork, while also helping the girls deepen their understanding of mathematical patterns in a fun and practical way. There was lots of enthusiasm, concentration and excitement as the girls experimented with colours, shapes and objects, proudly showing off their finished patterns. All of the girls thoroughly enjoyed the wide variety of activities on offer and it was wonderful to see their confidence and creativity shine throughout the lesson.

Oceans of the World

Year Two have enjoyed their first Geography lesson of the term, learning about the world we live in. Using globes and atlases, the girls focused on finding and identifying the continents and oceans of the world. They learned the names of each continent and discovered some interesting facts, such as Asia being the biggest continent and Europe being the most densely populated continent. We look forward to learning more about our world as we continue with this exciting topic.

Going Bananas!

In Year Three, the girls have been learning about instructional texts and the language features needed to write them effectively. They have been identifying imperative verbs and practising how to give clear, concise instructions. During their Creative Writing lesson, the girls worked with their teacher to make a banana smoothie, listening carefully and picking out the imperative verbs used throughout the process. After tasting the smoothie – which some enjoyed more than others - they wrote their own sets of instructions, focusing on clarity, conciseness and the accurate use of imperative verbs.

Tackling new challenges

Our Year Four girls have returned to school after the Christmas break with a positive attitude and an impressive readiness to learn. They have settled back into routines quickly and are showing great enthusiasm in the classroom. The girls are working hard across all subjects, with a particular highlight being their achievements in Mathematics. They are confidently tackling new challenges, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills and a clear understanding of key concepts. Overall, it has been an excellent start to the term and the girls’ focus, effort and super smiles have given us all a super first week.

Divide and Conquer

It has been a pleasure to welcome Year 5 back to school after the break. The children have returned refreshed and ready to learn, showing positive attitudes and a hardworking approach in class. They have settled quickly back into routines and are demonstrating a strong commitment to their learning. In Mathematics, the focus this week has been on division, with pupils revisiting key strategies and applying them confidently to a range of problems. The children have been encouraged to explain their reasoning clearly and to persevere when tackling more challenging tasks. In Creative Writing, the class has been developing their narrative skills by focusing on writing effective problems and resolutions. They have explored how to build interest in their stories before resolving events clearly and thoughtfully.

We are very pleased with the positive start Year 5 have made and look forward to an engaging and productive term ahead.

Performance Poetry

This week in English, Year Six have been immersed in The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. The girls thoroughly enjoyed analysing the poem, exploring its dramatic storyline and uncovering how the rhyme structure helps to build tension and pace. They showed great confidence when performing their favourite stanza, focusing on expression, rhythm and atmosphere to bring the poem to life. Overall, it has been a creative and engaging week of poetry study.
