On the afternoon of Friday 5 December, linguists in Years 10–13 took part in an engaging webinar on studying Modern Foreign Languages at university and the wide range of careers that languages can lead to.

The event was organised and delivered by Business Language Champions, a company that specialises in running enrichment opportunities for young people learning languages in schools.

The webinar featured four guest speakers. Three of them are current university students studying languages, and they spoke about their personal experiences, the transition from school to university, and the variety of degree pathways available. They offered valuable advice on the different types of language courses on offer, from single-honours degrees to joint subjects, and highlighted the many ways languages can be combined with disciplines such as business, politics, law, science, or history.

The fourth speaker discussed her professional journey following her languages degree. She outlined the diverse roles she has worked in and demonstrated how language skills can open doors in a wide range of sectors, both in the UK and internationally.

The pupils learnt how widely applicable language skills are in the modern world, from enhancing employability to enriching cultural understanding, and gained a clearer sense of the exciting opportunities that MFL study can offer both academically and professionally.
