It is all to easy to know how to behave in a kind and caring manner, but not quite as straightforward to apply this to daily life, particularly when you are a young person navigating friendships and the challenges of modern life. Anti-bullying week is a chance to highlight the importance of focusing on kindness both in actions and words, but also to find out what to do when things go wrong.
Odd socks day has helped highlight the strength of difference and how to use power for good. The girls confidently told me that Odd Socks Day was about showing that we are all different and yet all the same and this filled me with great pride. Exploring the choices the girls had made with regards to their odd socks was a lot of fun! Some had chosen subtle differences, whilst others had been brave enough to embrace neon green and stripey football socks or ones with rabbit ears and flowers. The real strength of the day was the way in which it started the conversation about celebrating differences and standing up for each other.
As adults we have such an important role to play whether we are parents, teachers or carers. Through modelling positive choices and demonstrating kindness through our thoughts, words and actions the young people in our care we can provide a safe and secure environment for them to become the best versions of themselves. At EHS Prep, we use the Girls on Board programme, an approach which empowers girls to solve their own friendship problems and recognises that they are often the only ones who can. Highlighting the power of honesty, even when mistakes have been made, can be incredibly powerful. But we know it takes a safe and supportive environment to allow girls to be brave enough to tell the truth and to stand up for their friends in times of need.
Assessments have been in full swing this week and many of the girls have been heard saying, 'it's our chance to show off!' Rarely do I encourage showing off, but was pleased to see the girls positively approaching this aspect of school life! These assessments are part of our more broad academic rigour and are here to help teaching staff identify areas which require focus. A child's academic journey is rarely linear, but with a team of caring and dedicated staff I am confident that every pupil within the Prep School will make clear progress over the course of the academic year.
Wishing you a peaceful weekend.
