The Curriculum in Detail

At EHS Prep we prepare your daughter for 11+ and Senior School entrance examinations. Our unique environment enables girls to try out new and unfamiliar concepts with learning, known as intellectual risk-taking, helping to cultivate curiosity, creativity, and develop problem-solving skills. We prepare girls for success both in and beyond school, with a curiosity-driven culture that ensures our girls reach their full academic potential, and have the facilities to support this.

Learning Objectives

How we Teach our Prep Students

These subjects may be taught by their form teacher or by a subject specialist and many opportunities are given to extend the girls' learning with visits and workshops as appropriate. Girls are also encouraged to develop their skills further by taking part in challenging national competitions such as the Junior Maths Challenge, Junior Languages and and British Science Week, in addition to any connected to special events.

Our Facilities

The Prep School has specialist subject rooms including two fully equipped Computer suites, with a  green screen, an Art Studio, Language Room, Science Laboratory, Prep Hall and fully stocked Library which is used regularly by classes.

Music is taught by specialist teachers in the Music School and the girls are given numerous opportunities to perform to their peers and parents. This includes the Carol Service, class assemblies, Tea Time Concerts for Years 3 to 6, Whole School Concerts, Summer Concert and the Year 6 Production. There are also some opportunities to collaborate in projects with the Senior School.

One of the benefits of being a 'through school' is that girls have access to facilities and specialist teacher expertise not found in stand-alone Prep Schools. Our multi-use performance space The Octagon, the Music School and our on-site swimming pool and large gymnasium are good examples.

Beyond the Curriculum

The curriculum is enhanced for all girls throughout the year with a well balanced programme of school visits and workshops. Girls are given the opportunity to participate in national competitions and sporting events, and regular visits to the school allotment are also used to extend the girls' studies in a variety of subjects.

As the girls get older they begin to travel further afield for their school visits with the opportunity for residential visits. In Year 4, the girls can experience the outdoor activities on offer at Boreatton Park, the PGL adventure centre.

Next comes the opportunity for residential visits. Girls in Year 5 spend a week at the Cranedale Field Studies Centre, in Yorkshire, to extend their Science and Geography skills. France is the destination for the Year 6 girls who have the chance to study French culture and some adventure activities.

Back at school, the Year 6 Summer Term curriculum also includes a programme of enrichment activities to extend the girls’ skills and interests further.  This follows the Year 6 annual musical production featuring all of the girls and providing a lasting set of shared memories.
