Year 13 Focus on Spectroscopy
20 November 2015
On Wednesday 11 November, Year 13 Chemistry students set off to Nottingham University. After an hour's minibus journey, we arrived at the University where we would take part in a workshop for A-Level students.
The workshop focused on infra-red spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy, two methods used today in identifying chemical substances.
During the course of the day, we were able to prepare our own samples in a university lab and we were able to test these samples and produce our own mass spectrums.
Additionally we had the opportunity to see the latest equipment used to identify chemicals today and we were given tutorials on how chemists use this equipment to help identify samples they make.
Overall the day was very informative and allowed us to experience chemistry beyond the A-Level specification. We would like to thank Mr T and Mrs Brookes for taking us on this trip, which was enjoyed by all.
