Nursery to Year Six Highlights

Preparatory

04 July 2025

It’s been a fun and action-packed week in Pre-Prep and Prep, with a range of exciting activities aimed at sparking creativity, curiosity and confidence. Explore the gallery below to see what each year group has been up to!

Fun in the Sun

This week in Nursery, the theme has been ‘Summer’ – and with the glorious sunshine and soaring temperatures, it could not have been more perfect! The girls have been learning all about the weather by watching simple weather forecasts and spotting sunshine symbols, helping the girls make connections between what they see on screen and what they feel outside. The girls enjoyed looking at pictures of the sun and then creating their very own sunny artwork using paints. The dressing-up area was transformed into a Summer holiday wardrobe and it was lovely to see the girls role-playing in sunglasses, sunhats and Summer clothes. The girls have also shared seasonal stories and non-fiction books all about Summer, holidays and hot weather. With the heat this week, water play has been a big hit – from splashing and pouring to filling and scooping, it has been the perfect way to keep cool while building important physical and social skills. The girls even had great fun in the swimming pool, splashing about and enjoying the refreshing water – a real highlight of the week!

Kindergarten Graduation: An Assembly to Remember!

This week Kindergarten girls celebrated their Graduation Assembly with smiles, songs and proud families in attendance!  Dressed in their smart graduation hats, they sang We're on Our Way, followed by a heartfelt group recitation of the poem We're Ready! Each child shared what they loved most about Kindergarten and showed drawings and paintings that they had created. From swimming to playing with friends, their favourites highlighted a year full of learning and joy. The assembly ended with every student receiving a Certificate of Achievement. It was a proud moment for all, marking the end of a wonderful year and the beginning of an exciting new journey!

On Safari!

This week, Reception girls enjoyed an unforgettable day out at West Midlands Safari Park, where their Topic of ‘Creatures Great and Small’ came to life.  The morning was spent exploring large animal habitats whilst driving through the park. Pupils came face-to-face with giraffes, rhinos, and even a pride of lions lounging in the sun. They were fascinated by the animals’ size and behaviour and there was much discussion and laughter about which was their favourite animal. After a picnic lunch, the excitement continued with a visit to the fairground rides inside the park. Squeals of delight rang out as girls spun around on mini lion carousels, zebra rides and they even tried jeep driving. Reception pupils had a day full of discovery and memories they will treasure for years to come.

Beautiful Bears!

The Year One hand puppets are finally finished and the girls are rightly proud of their creations. They began the project at the start of the summer term, starting with designing their puppets before moving on to making them. Each teddy puppet has been lovingly dressed with skirts, earrings, necklaces and buttons. The girls have thoroughly enjoyed playing with their puppets and are excited to take them home next week as a special keepsake when the summer holidays begin.

Marvellous Minibeasts!

Year Two have been learning all about minibeasts in their Science lessons this term.  Over the last few months, in their Music lessons, they have also been working hard to learn a variety of songs about minibeasts.  Last week they combined their scientific knowledge with their musical skills to perform a truly memorable concert for their school friends and families.  The pupils thoroughly enjoyed singing and joining in with actions, particularly for the Centipede Song, where they wore stripy socks on their hands!  They also taught their audience many interesting facts about a wide variety of minibeasts.  The pupils performed with confidence and enthusiasm to an audience of Prep pupils in the morning and to their families in the afternoon. Well done, Year Two!

Fantastic facts

This term, Year Three girls have been working collaboratively in small groups to research and present facts about different world religions. They showed fantastic co-operation and impressive presentation skills as they shared their findings with the class. Through this work, the children have developed a deeper understanding and respect for the beliefs and practices of various faiths. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity and empathy grow as they learn about the rich diversity of religions around the world.

Artistic illusions

In Art, pupils in Year Four have been studying perspective drawing. Perspective drawing is a technique that gives the illusion of spatial depth, or perspective, to drawings and paintings. The girls have worked really hard to have a one point disappearing picture and have produced some super pictures. Well done, Year Four!

Year Five Step Back in Time with Professor McGinty’s Victorian Workshop

On Tuesday, Year Five pupils at were transported back in time as they took part in an unforgettable Victorian workshop led by the ever-entertaining Professor McGinty. Bringing history vividly to life, Professor McGinty delivered a fun and engaging session filled with fascinating facts, curious artefacts and plenty of laughter. The girls examined real and replica artefacts, handled mystery objects from the past and enjoyed guessing their uses—often with some very amusing suggestions! From the serious to the silly, every moment was packed with enthusiasm and learning. The workshop not only enriched the children’s understanding of the Victorian era but also sparked their imaginations and brought a new appreciation for life in the past. Professor McGinty’s dynamic and humorous style kept everyone engaged and ensured this historical adventure will be remembered for a long time to come. It was a morning of discovery, as the girls also experimented with slate boards and ink pens to write as neatly as they could, to not blot their copybooks!  Year Five loved every minute.

Science Club – Dissecting Hearts!

This week, our keen young scientists took part in an exciting (and very advanced!) dissection in Science Club. Guided by our specialist Science teacher, Mrs Eveleigh, the children explored real animal hearts to learn how this amazing organ works. They carefully identified the chambers, valves and blood vessels, bringing their classroom learning to life in a truly unforgettable way. At EHS, we are proud to offer specialist teaching that challenges our pupils and sparks their curiosity far beyond the standard Year Six curriculum. Our Science Club is just one example of how we help children develop their practical skills, scientific knowledge and confidence to ask big questions about the world around them. Well done to all our budding biologists – we cannot wait to see what you investigate next!

National Mathematics Challenge

A group of enthusiastic Year Four girls recently took part in the First Mathematics Challenge, run by the Mathematical Associate. This is a prestigious national competition designed for 7–9 year olds. This exciting challenge is known for its tricky problem-solving questions that really make children think, requiring not only a strong grasp of mathematical concepts, but also perseverance, logical reasoning and resilience.

We are incredibly proud of all the girls who took part – they tackled the questions with determination and a positive attitude, showing a love for learning and a willingness to embrace challenge. A special congratulations goes to Kira, who achieved a Gold Certificate – an outstanding accomplishment that reflects her hard work, sharp thinking and dedication. Well done to all the girls involved!

This wonderful achievement follows on from earlier success in the academic year, when five of our brilliant Year Six mathematicians – Hitha, Davica, Jessica, Emily and Sarah – were invited to take part in the Bonus Round of the Primary Maths Challenge, where children compete at an international level. We were thrilled to see their mathematical talents recognised and we offer huge congratulations to Hitha for earning a Silver Certificate in this highly challenging round – an exceptional result that places her among the top young mathematicians.
