Nursery Rhyme Fun
18 November 2022
This week has seen children across the country celebrate their favourite rhymes as they have marked World Nursery Rhyme Week. Listening to and singing nursery rhymes has been proven to be very beneficial to early development. They encourage skills in communication, language and rhythm and help to develop an understanding of a wide range of vocabulary.
In Westbourne, we began the week by inviting parents to join us in Nursery on Monday morning for coffee and Nursery Rhyme games. These included building a wall for Humpty Dumpty, making playdough stars, themed jigsaws and books to share. There was a quiz to challenge parents’ knowledge too. The girls dressed up and we welcomed characters from the rhymes Little Bo Peep, Incy Wincy Spider, Row Your Boat and Hey Diddle Diddle.
During the coffee morning the Nursery girls performed a rhyme specially written for EHS by Mrs Hartley which we all enjoyed.
Five traditional rhymes were studied during the week with one each day as the main focus:
Monday – The Big Ship Sails on the Alley Alley Oh – Girls played the playground game as they sang the song.
Tuesday – 1,2,3,4,5, Once I Caught a Fish Alive – they used rods to catch fish that had numbers on, then put the numbers in order.
Wednesday – 5 Little Speckled Frogs. The girls sat on a log with frog headbands on. They sang the song and acted the story by jumping in the pool one by
one.
Thursday – BINGO. They sang the song but instead of clapping for the missing letters, they played different percussion instruments.
Friday – Twinkle, Twinkle – girls made sparkly star wands.
Mrs Hartley, Mrs Macro and Mrs Aston all visited during the week to share their favourite rhymes which they all enjoyed.
