Happy Birthday, EHS

Westbourne | Preparatory | Senior School | Sixth Form

27 January 2023

Today the pupils and staff from across the whole school - from Nursery to Sixth Form - gathered together in the Octagon to celebrate Edgbaston High School’s 147th birthday.

Girls from Years 1, 6, 7 and 13 helped to present the assembly which started by learning about local people who had been named in the New Year’s Honours list by King Charles. This was followed by looking at all the awards and honours that girls can be awarded whilst they are studying at EHS; these begin in Nursery and follow every year.

We then considered what awards we might make to EHS on its birthday. The ‘E’ award would be given for Experiences that the school offers. These are in lessons, in co-curricular clubs of which there are more than 80 on offer, and in the wide variety of residential trips on offer.

The ‘H’ award would be for Helping us. EHS prepares students in many ways, helping them to be organised, to be brave and to never being afraid to try new things. It helps us to work together in school and in our communities and to ready for life beyond school.

The final ‘S’ award would be for Success.  From an early age girls are helped to achieve success in many areas, both academic and personal. The award could also be for Special as EHS is such a unique place to study where friends and memories will be made for life.

The assembly featured lots of wonderful music, with Years 1 - 6 singing ‘When I Grow Up’, the Senior Choir singing ‘Power in Me,’ and Westbourne and Years 1 and 2 performing the specially composed EHS Birthday Song. Members of music ensembles from Prep and Senior School joined together to accompany.

The assembly concluded with everyone singing Happy Birthday to the school and there was, of course, cake for all.
