Insect Investigation Creates a Buzz in Year 2

Preparatory

02 July 2021

This term one of the topics studied by Year 2 has been minibeasts. They have researched information, completed work in Science and Art and learnt some appropriate songs in Music too.

They recently embarked on an adventure to the school allotment in search of some creepy crawlies. Armed with a magnifying glass the girls searched under rocks, on leaves and in the shrubs for the minibeasts. They had great fun seeking out bees, ladybirds and worms to name a few. Year 2 showed great team work to complete their tally chart identifying all of the creatures they found. The allotment visit was to support Year 2's learning all about Minibeasts. They have learned about invertebrates, parts of an insect and have also carried out an investigation about woodlice.

The girls have been busy making a Ladybird information book as part of their topic. They have learnt how to make a contents page and a glossary. They have included much information about ladybirds such as their lifecycle, different types of ladybirds, a labelled diagram of their body parts, poems, quizzes, word searches and a symmetrical picture created using a computer drawing program. They have thoroughly enjoyed the process of making our first information book and decorating the covers!

The finalé of their topic was to perform a Minibeast Concert. This year the girls performed outside on the terrace to an audience of Year 1 and staff. The girls sang several songs and retold the story of James and the Giant Peach. They all performed confidently and clearly with great enjoyment. We are sure the parents are eagerly awaiting the video version of the mini production.
