This Week in Westbourne

Westbourne

Girls in Nursery have been busy learning how to make a cup of tea this week with a focus on two nursery rhymes on the same theme. These were Polly Put the Kettle On and I’m a Little Teapot. These actions involved following sets of instructions and once made they had the opportunity to taste a variety of hot drinks and to vote for their favourite.  This was followed by emergent, have-a-go writing about the sequence of actions.  The girls also enjoyed decorating giant teacups. In Mathematics they worked on the number 2 this week using number blocks, rainbow writing and identifying the numeral.

In this National Storytelling Week Kindergarten have enjoyed a Gruffalo themed week after studying the ‘g’ sound last week. In Literacy they have shared and retold the story and used a range of words to describe the story book favourite. They have sung the story too and have moved like the characters. They have made the characters out of shapes and have ordered them by length, height and weight in Mathematics. Making Gruffalo Crumble was a favourite activity as was exploring in the themed sensory tray.

The girls went on to study the next book in the series, ‘The Gruffalo’s Child and they thought about the feelings of the characters in both stories.

In advance of taking part in the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch weekend, Reception girls had a trial run in their outdoor classroom last Friday. While they were there, they made bird feeders to attract even more birds into Westbourne playground.

On a more relaxed note, girls enjoyed their first ever sewing lesson.  It was a wonderful opportunity to use their communication and language skills by asking questions and finding out how things are made as well as talking to the adults helping them. They also developed their fine motor skills using the needles and thread.

After reading The Scarecrow’s Wedding by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, girls have started to make their own scarecrows, complete with straw, patchwork jackets and hats!  Next week they will be describing them in Creative Writing.
