European Day of Languages

Senior School

30 September 2022

European Day of Languages is celebrated annually on 26th September.  This year we decided to take it a step further and celebrate, not only European languages but all the languages spoken in our school community. We carried out a survey across the Senior School and discovered that between pupils and staff we speak or understand nearly 50 languages and we wanted to celebrate this diversity.

We began our week with an assembly on Monday where we were lucky enough to enjoy a performance from Dino and Gigi (our very own Miss Bennet along with her singing partner Ben). They sang some beautiful love songs in French and Portuguese and we were bathed in a rosy glow for the rest of the day!

On Monday afternoon, Year 9 were treated to dance workshops where they learnt a European, a Chinese and an Indian dance.  We would particularly like to thank our Mandarin teacher Mrs Zhang and Erendeep Chahal and Sana Kumar from Year 13 who helped us to run the afternoon.  Much fun was had by all and it was great to see the girls engaging so actively with different cultures.

Throughout this week we have been running lunchtime language lessons where we have invited pupils who speak another language at home to teach a short lesson to their peers about their language and culture. We have been lucky enough to enjoy lessons in Russian, Korean, Urdu, Gujarati, Welsh, Cantonese, Italian, Pashto, Marathi, Arabic and Punjabi. The MFL department would like to thank those girls who gave up their lunchtimes, both to teach a lesson or to attend and learn something new.
