Green Fingered Gardeners

Preparatory

30 September 2022

With the summer being so hot and water being in short supply it was hard to know how much produce would survive at our allotment.

It was clear that we need not have worried when we won so many prizes at the Guinea Gardens Summer Show. There were first places for potatoes, carrots, marrow, beetroot, second places for apples and courgettes and third places for flowers and blackberries.  There was also a prize for humour when we won first prize in the crazy fruit class - because they were nuts! The girls were delighted to be presented with a shield for the heaviest potato in the Summer Show and a trophy for best allotment in the show.

Our Year 6 gardeners, who have watched these prize winners grow, this week had the pleasure of harvesting the produce. They dug over one of the potato beds and were delighted to find a bumper crop! They also took home tomatoes, beans, courgettes, sorrel and lots of apples from the adjacent orchard. Happy tummies all round!

We will soon be starting to prepare the allotment for the winter months ahead and will also be watching our pumpkin grow.  After half term we will pick the pumpkin and try to guess the weight.  We will keep you updated on the results!
