Physicists Get Into the Swing

Senior School

09 December 2022

On Thursday evening, Year 11 students were given an introduction to some concepts covered in A-level Physics course.

The session was based around the topic of Waves and Oscillations. After starting in a lab-based environment the group then moved on to test their observation and measuring skills using a 10m long human pendulum hanging from the highest point in the Octagon.

Using a series of brave volunteers as lab rats, the girls were able to test factors that affect the period of oscillation: what drives the oscillation and why a gentle push can quickly cause the height of the swing to build up.

After this, students tackled series of challenges based on waves and creating wave patterns on springs, pipes and plates and, for the finalé, the girls made aluminium bars 'sing' simply by running their hands along them.

A fantastic and very noisy evening was had by all.
