Happy Birthday, EHS!

Westbourne | Preparatory | Senior School | Sixth Form

31 January 2020

On Wednesday, the whole EHS community of girls from Nursery to the Sixth Form joined staff to gather together in the Octagon in celebration of the school’s founding in 1876, our ‘birthday’.

The special assembly was opened by the Senior Choir who set the tone perfectly with their version of ‘The New World’ by Jason Robert Brown. This was followed by a loud and rousing performance from pupils who did some excellent African drumming. Finally, the Prep Choir sang ‘Rule the World’ beautifully.

Mrs Macro led the morning’s proceedings, assisted by several members of staff. It was an opportunity to talk about, and reflect on, how the school has changed over 144 years whilst managing to maintain the most important and distinctive values at its heart. In what has become a new EHS tradition, we were delighted to see Prep girls perform ‘The EHS Birthday Song’, a piece of music written especially for the occasion by Mr Southall and Mr Skilbeck.

To close, pupils with birthdays that day were then invited on to the stage to help blow out the candles on the birthday cake before everyone sang ‘Happy Birthday, Dear School’ and the much-loved EHS School Song.

Thank you to all our pupils, parents and staff who make Edgbaston High School such a wonderful place to learn and work. We look forward to celebrating many more birthdays in the years ahead!
