Lights, Camera, Action!

Senior School

08 July 2022

On the last Wednesday of term, Year 10 were treated to an off-timetable day spent working on short films. However, these were not your ordinary short films, made in one take, with shaky hands following all the action. These films consisted of professional-looking shots, each with a different story-line and lots of creative visuals and effects.

The workshop company called the Young Film Academy came into school, and explained some key concepts of filmmaking to us. In the morning, we learnt fight choreography - punching without having to actually hit anyone. After a few interesting attempts, and experimenting with different angles, some very successful, and realistic-looking punches were recorded on film for us all to watch.

After an interesting session on the history of film, we were challenged with the ‘small’ task of recording a three shot film, consisting of a wide, medium, and close up. Although this sounds like a small and easy task, most groups spent the full 30 mins planning, recording and editing the clips on iMovie, and of course the best part, showing them off to the rest of the year group, and being critiqued by the two workshop experts, Ben and Jesse.

We thought the three shot film was quite challenging to get right, but we were then told to make a 10 shot film! We had a bit more freedom with this film, and after an afternoon of takes, drama and crazy plot lines, all the films were judged by Mrs Macro, Ben and Jesse to determine the winner of the ‘Oscar’.

Year 10 thank Mrs Macro for this amazing idea, and Miss Ajmal for looking after everyone the whole day.
