Year 3 Environmentalists

Preparatory

23 June 2023

As part of their Science topic on ‘Helping Plants Grow Well’ Year 3 visited Lower Smite Farm owned by Worcestershire Wildlife Trust. The farm is a 150 acre working arable farm with an Environmental Education Centre.

Year 3 dissected flowers to help them understand pollination and to know the names of parts of flowers. They went on a wildflower hunt looking for daisy, bowl and bell shaped flowers. They examined different soil structures and carried out an experiment to see if the addition of compost to soil improved its quality. As different pollinators, they had a race to transfer pollen between flowers.

The highlight of the day was worm charming in the woodland area. The girls were delighted to dig through the soil in search of worms and other soil based animals.
