This Week in Westbourne

Westbourne

26 April 2024

This week in Nursery has been all about identifying circles and spheres both inside and outside.  The girls have further developed their fine motor skills by using their thumb and index finger to pick up circle shaped cheerios and sticking them onto a circle outline.  They used hand muscles to operate the hole punch and punch the correct number of holes in the different leaves in the outdoor classroom.  They also had fun blowing and chasing 'sphere' shaped bubbles and practised kicking skills with the 'sphere' shaped balls.  Paint bubbles were blown and caught on a circle shaped piece of paper. To finish the week the girls made circle shaped pizzas

Kindergarten have also been active both inside and outside of the classroom. The phoneme of the week has been 'f' which has given the chance to explore the story of The Rainbow Fish! Girls loved talking about the book and took part in classroom activities to retell the story. They also practised their handwriting and letter formation and created metallic rainbow fish using their fingerprints.

This week the curiosity corner has been all about the life cycle of a frog which has sparked an interest for the girls to investigate further. Kindergarten girls created their very own concertina-legged frogs while thinking about what happens in the cycle from frogspawn to frog. New facts were learned too, for example, frogs don't drink water like humans, the water is absorbed through their skins! The girls also looked closely at frogs’ webbed feet and thought about how this helped them swim in water.

The focus in numeracy was to think about subtraction. They did this by using groups of farm animals. Girls took different numbers of animals away from a group and carefully counted those that were left. They also practised their repeating patterns by making fruit kebabs! The fruit theme followed on into our food activity where we made frogs using apples and grapes!

With 'Creatures Great and Small' being the main topic this term, Reception girls were delighted to be writing about the Three Little Pigs in their Creative Writing lesson this week. There was much discussion about different materials being used for the three pig's houses and, along with their increasing phonics knowledge, the girls produced some wonderful writing. In their Mathematics lessons, we learnt about the properties of 3D shapes and combined with their writing, made a Three Little Pig story cube.

The topic of 'subtraction' was introduced in Mathematics and different objects were used to help their understanding. The most popular items used were the edible treats to demonstrate take away!  After working in pairs, girls have also reinforced their understanding of number bonds to 10 using buttons, butterflies and whiteboards!
