This Week in Westbourne
17 May 2024
Continuing the half term’s theme on shape the girls in Nursery have studied rectangles, oblongs and cuboids this week. They have printed using rectangle sponges, used rectangle shaped construction to build long and tall cuboids and looked at all the different ways that they could move across a rectangle shaped bench.
They went on a rectangle hunt inside the classroom and around school. In the outdoor classroom they made rectangles from twigs and sticks. They also looked at the differences and similarities between squares and oblongs and sorted objects into two sets accordingly. Also in Mathematics they have been practising number formation, counting groups and learning how to play shape dominoes. They put a long piece of paper down on the classroom floor and drew round lots of large 2D shapes too.
In Kindergarten this week girls have enjoyed using bats, balls and balloons as part of their work on the letter sound b! Spending time in the outdoor classroom creating nature bracelets was much enjoyed too!
In the classroom, children have been working hard on their letter formation. They have written about bumble bees, butterflies and birthdays! Some of the children have become much more confident in using their sounds to blend and segment words and can now write some cvc words themselves! Girls enjoyed counting out buns in Mathematics lessons and also carefully counted candles onto birthday cakes. Symmetry is a new word that the children have learnt this week and explored through their work on butterflies.
Reception girls have been very busy too. In Numeracy, the girls have been estimating by studying 'capacity'. They were estimating how many teddies would fit into different sized containers as well as seeing how many cups of sand it would take to fill a teapot or bowl. They also looked at themselves in the mirror to see their reflections as an introduction to doubling.
Continuing with Literacy, girls also learnt different digraph spellings and new 'tricky words' and wrote their own sentences on the whiteboards. They were very pleased
to show these to their parents via Seesaw.
In the outdoor area, girls enjoyed experimenting with the water play activities in the sunshine as well as keeping cool! They have also learnt about extinction and
created their very own clay dinosaurs which are roaring in the classroom! We even had time to paint some camouflaged animals that were hiding. Do read in the separate
article about the mysterious egg that arrived in Reception.
Westbourne opened classrooms to visitors on Wednesday and wanted to show them their wonderful work. Some girls were lucky enough to demonstrate their amazing reading too.
Well done Reception!
