Talent Unearthed in Sonnet Competition

Senior School

01 July 2022

The English and Drama department are very proud to announce the winners of the inaugural Year 8 Sonnet competition.

The girls have been looking at the form, structure, content and style of a Shakespearean sonnet in their English lessons and then devising their own. In their Drama lessons they have been rehearsing how to perform and share these sonnets to capture the imagination of an audience. There were so many entries that we had to enrol the Sixth Form scholars, Evie and Gursharan, to whittle down a shortlist.

Honourable mentions must go to all of the girls shortlisted:

Ali, Anika and Zhian: A Trilogy of Sonnets
Manahil: A Rose Holding the petals of emotions
Tinotenda: Seasons
Kiri: Obsession and You didn’t love me
Anika: A true person’s love
Harleen: The way I loved you

A big congratulations goes to the runner up  - Manasa Sundhar - for a beautiful poem titled The Gift of Love (pictured below).

And the biggest congratulations go to the winner - Alyzah Hussain – for a simply stunning poem that delighted all of the judges in the English and the Drama department (also below).

Well done!
Miss O’Hare and Miss Rowntree
