Sixth Form Centre Unveiled

Sixth Form

20 September 2022

This term, Year 12 and Year 13 students are benefitting from an innovative project that has reinvigorated the Sixth Form Centre, creating a new and inspiring setting that successfully bridges the gap between Sixth Form study and university life.

The project, delivered by education-specific interior design organisation Envoplan, set out to reconfigure the existing space to enhance productivity and impact educational outcomes through intelligent design. The mix of seating options suits every kind of learner, creating zoned areas that facilitate both collaborative and independent learning, and a new and sophisticated colour palette provides a calm environment in which to work. The scope of work included the construction of a café and kitchenette and the refurbishment of dedicated study areas, the mezzanine floor level, and the outside sun terrace.

Last year’s Year 11 and Year 12 students, our new Year 12 and Year 13, are the first students to use the reimagined Sixth Form Centre. The girls were actively involved in the design process, contributing to several workshops to arrive at the collaborative result of a modern learning environment and aspirational social space in keeping with their status as the most senior pupils in school. They are already enjoying their new space:

“During the consultation process we were asked to write down adjectives that we wanted the new centre to embody, and I feel the project has really met the brief. It feels warm and inviting.” Evie

“It feels like our own space….I feel like we’ve had real input into the design.” Indira

“The space is going to motivate me to work. I can see myself settling down to study here.” Alisha

“The outside terrace area is amazing. I can really see students using this space more - it’s perfect for when you need some fresh air and decompression time so I’m sure it will be well used.” Anna

Headmistress Clare Macro said: “We are delighted with the results of this project. We know that environment impacts educational outcomes and wellbeing; what we have created is a future-proofed learning environment that the girls want to spend time in, and we are already seeing the benefits in school, noting our students settling down more quickly to work, taking themselves off to one zone to work together or finding a quieter area for independent study.

“This is a space for them, designed by them. The Sixth Form represents an exciting time in a student’s school career when we encourage them to be bold and to embrace new-found independence, and the space reflects that. We hope that our students will be further motivated to meet their academic ambitions and look forward to helping them achieve their future success.”
