24 June 2022

This week began, as last week, with sporting activity. Firstly, we congratulated our ESSA swimming team who performed extremely well in the finals of the national competition in Sheffield and are now rated ninth in the country. Well done girls.

Secondly, our Year 5 girls headed off to the Silver Netball Festival to mark the approaching Commonwealth Games. They enjoyed a morning of workshops run by England coach Colette Thomson which included footwork, reaction time and shooting. The afternoon was then spent playing seven minute games during which badges were awarded for fairness and sportsmanship with five of our team gaining a badge.

Year 5 girls and parents have been extra busy this week as they visited us for individualised tours of Senior School on our Open Evening and they joined us for the Inter-House Swimming Gala. It was a close fought competition with all girls working hard to help their House succeed and with some close finishes. The eventual winners were Nightingale House.

With many trips and activities to enjoy, at the moment, there is still time to extend learning both inside and out of the classroom. Year 2 have been using ICT to find out interesting facts about Amy Johnson to practise their typing skills and to create a timeline of the events of her life.

To complement their Science topic Year 3 visited Lower Smite Farm in Worcestershire. They conducted an experiment to find out the best soil for growing vegetables, explored the wild flowers in the surrounding meadows, dissected a flower and played various games to enrich their learning. The worm game was definitely the most popular!

Year 4 learnt some dances that Tudor sailors would have taken part in on board ship on long voyages to keep fit. They were accompanied by Mr Pepper, playing the accordion.

A rather messy heart, lung and liver dissection concluded the last of the dissection series for Year 5 Science Club girls. It has been a fantastic year filled with explosions, objects flying through the air, flames, slime and blood. No wonder Super Scientists Club is one of the most popular clubs at EHS!

In our assemblies this week, we have marked National Drowning Prevention week with advice on how to stay safe near water, World Music Day, Public Service Day and International Women in Engineering Day. This has helped develop girls’ knowledge and understanding of people across the globe and different cultures.

In our Celebration Assembly, we congratulated all of our teams and presented individual awards to Grace and Eliza for Ballet, Waddiyah for Judo and Rihanna for her reading challenge. There were Independent Learning awards to Supreeta, Jashvita and Emily for their Platinum Challenge entries and to Isla and Eliza for some independent projects of personal interest.  Well done to all.

This week has ended with a visit to Ash End Farm for Year 2 and a trip to Ancient Egypt for Year 6 girls. They are certainly well travelled, having also ‘visited’ France this week for the French Week experience.

Next week we have Sports Day for all girls from Nursery to Year 6, Year 4 Swimming Gala, Viking Day for Year 3 and Year 2 Minibeast Concert to look forward to.
