A Show Stopping Jubilee Bake Off

Senior School

24 June 2022

Last week was House Bake-Off week at EHS. For the first time in three years, the judges were actually able to taste the entries!

Each year group had a baking and decorating challenge set for them in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

On Monday, Year 7 baked and decorated ‘Queenies Cupcakes’. Esme Du Croz and Aishia Nazir got St. Patrick off to an early lead. The judges were particularly impressed by the delicious jammy centre and intricate design.

Next, Year 8 were tasked to bake and decorate ‘British Biscuits’ and the win was taken by St. Patrick thanks to Millie Wood and Simar Bharya. The judges reported that their biscuits had a lovely bake, good flavour and were beautifully decorated with interesting themes.

Year 9 took up the challenge of baking ‘Corgi Cookies’ on day three and gave the judges the biggest challenge to date. In the end we had joint winners, Norehan Elkhazin and Sophia Yaqoob from St. Andrew and Anjali Doal and Manpreet Athwal from St. Francis whose cookies had wonderful flavours and were true to the corgi theme.

On Thursday, Year 10 turned their hand to the classic Victoria Sandwich Cake. The judges gave first prize to May Hadley and Charlie Linford from St. David noting their original design, beautiful decorations and delicious cake. The judges also gave special mention to second place holders Beryl Kong and Hannah Shutt from St. Francis for the little corgi cakes they made to accompany their main design.

The final student round was Year 12 who had free reign to create their own Show Stoppers under the theme of “Crowning Glory”.  Imaan Ahmed and Fajr Malik’s Orb and Sceptre design took the win for St. Francis. The judges were very impressed with the range of different textures in their bake and the excellent adherence to the theme.

On the same theme, the staff brought in their entries on Monday of this week with Miss Roye winning for St. George. Her bake had an intricate design which captured the theme beautifully, and also tasted incredible!

Thank you to all of the girls and staff who entered the competition and baked, also to the judges who took on an almost impossible task of finding winners amongst the amazing array of creations.

Prizes will be given out and the overall winning house will be announced in Final Assembly at the end of the academic year.
