17 February 2023

Our week started with a visit for Year 5 to one of Senior School’s Art Studios.  The girls enjoyed a portrait workshop with Miss Mullett and Sixth Form artists and we are looking forward to seeing their finished masterpieces.

This week has included several special days being featured in our assemblies.  On Tuesday all girls in Prep learnt more about St Valentine and the day to show care for those who are special to us.  We also looked at different traditions around the world.

After this assembly Ellie, in Year 6 encouraged girls in Years 4, 5 and 6 to consider joining Harborne Little League with girls from many other schools in the area.  Ellie shared her own valuable experiences of being part of Quidditch Team and meeting new people.  She shared her medal of participation and her individual trophy, having been voted Players Player of the Year by members of her team last season.  We are sure Ellie has inspired girls to join a Harry Potter named team as it is a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

Two of our Librarians, Joanna and Anjali also launched a new feature for the Library.  This is ‘Riddle of the Week’.  The riddle will change each week and the girls can try to solve it on their visits to the Library.  We are looking forward to the challenge.  Girls are also encouraged to look out for the quizzes linked to the week’s edition of First News.

On Wednesday, the theme of assembly for our younger girls was Pancake Day which takes place during half term this year.  We looked at the history and traditions of Shrove Tuesday and its place in the Christian Calendar.  We also practised some pancake tossing ready for our Inter House Pancake Race later in the week.  The girls were amazed to hear that the largest pancake ever made was 15 metres in diameter, bigger than Prep Hall!

Our last week of the half term finished with our Celebration Assembly.  This week we drew the Courtesy Counts prizes.  It is clear how polite and helpful the girls in Prep are from the number of awards we had to draw from.  Well done everyone.

There were Independent Challenge Board certificates for Emily Hadley, Catie Tran, Hannah Cooray, Robyn Shankawalia and Amelia Haywood for their work on Piano Day and Independent Learning awards for Art work completed out of school for Aisha Hussain, Alya Karamehmed, Helin Wang, Isla Slater, Zahra Pirmohamed and Mariam Nazki.

We are also grateful to Agniya who was this week’s Morning Musician playing Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy on the piano.

We also congratulated Emiley and Zoe Dias for achieving their Level 7 awards on the Trampoline with Birmingham Bouncers.  Prep girls never cease to amaze us with their varied range of extra-curricular activities.

We hope that everyone enjoys the half term break and we look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday 27 February.
