News from Prep

It has been another fairly quiet week in the Prep School with Year 5 girls away on their residential trip to Cranedale, the Eco Centre in North Yorkshire. There is a Geography and Science focus to the week and a range of great opportunities to study in the lab and out in the field. We have enjoyed hearing their daily updates and look forward to reporting on the trip in more detail next week and to having our whole Prep School back together.

Although it has been a shorter week containing the Bank Holiday, as usual, we have managed to pack the week full of learning both within and beyond the curriculum. The addition of the sunshine also enhanced play times with a return to our ‘down the hill’ grass area, much to the delight of the girls.

In the classroom, Year 1 have been putting their measuring skills to good use by drawing lines of given length and becoming more accurate with each exercise. We have also enjoyed looking at the display of their finished writing, painting and measuring work following their Toy Day.

Year 2 have enjoyed experimenting with clay to construct and to decorate their fish. They are very happy with the finished items and are looking forward to working with this material again in the future. In Year 3, the girls have also enjoyed experimenting. In their Science lessons they have been investigating the absorbency of different paper types as part of their work on materials. They discovered which type of paper would be best for clearing up spillages!

Year 6 girls have continued with their enrichment program and have found the knitting, crochet and wool crafts very challenging but we are pleased to have some finished knitted squares which are a great accomplishment. Another group has visited the Botanical Gardens to hone their persuasive writing skills and they are looking forward to the Bikeability sessions starting next week.

Co-curricular clubs continue with the introduction of the summer sports. In Swim Squad this week the girls used a range of items to help them to focus on smooth stroke technique. We look forward to seeing the skills in action in the forthcoming Inter House swimming galas.

Our assemblies this week have raised awareness of a number of important issues connected to our general well being. On Tuesday keeping safe in the sunny weather was discussed as it has been Sun Awareness Week. With our younger girls the importance and contagious nature of laughter was highlighted. This followed World Laughter Day at the weekend but we all agreed that every day should be laughter filled. The radical topic of spending screen free time was the focus for our older pupils on Thursday. We hope that girls have raised this topic at home during this special week.

We have ended the week with our Celebration Assembly. This was an opportunity to celebrate the success and wonderful performances given by 25 of our Year 3 and 4 musicians at the Teatime Concert on Thursday evening. There was a wealth of talent on show with performances on flute, violin, cello, piano, clarinet and from our young singers. Well done girls!

We also awarded individual certificates to Nell in Year 3 for her performance in the Birmingham and Solihull 2024 Invitational Gym competition and to Yasmin in Year 4 who completed 100 push-ups every day throughout April also raising £50 for Cancer Research UK. We presented certificates to our top three girls in the second round of the Junior Language Challenge. Well done to Jashvita who was first, Haya who was second and Layyan who was placed third. Well done.
